摘要:
The polymerizable derivatives of chemotherapeutic agents such as benzocaine, procaine, and amantadine were prepared and free-radical copolymerized with styrene or methyl methacrylate in order to obtain polymers with pharmacological activity and increased duration of action of the drugs. The monomeric and polymeric derivatives were subjected to hydrolysis in vitro in order to measure the release of the active ingredient.

摘要:
Grafting of methyl methacrylate onto poly(methyl-4-vinylbenzyl-sulfoxide-co-trichloroethyl methacrylate) is initiated by molybdenum (III) chloride in ethylene chloride. In a second step the obtained graft copolymers are grafted with styrene in the presence of chromium(II) acetate and morpholinocyclohexene in dimethylformamide. By this stepwise selective graft copolymerization technique, polymers can be tailored to give the required properties.

The photochemical behavior of poly[2(2-hydroxy-5-vinylphenyl)2H-benzotriazole)]-co-methyl methacrylate was studied by spectroscopic and analytical techniques; no degradation of this copolymer occurred when the bulk polymer was exposed for several thousand hours of accelerated aging by ultraviolet irradiation. However, by the end of the period, surface deterioration became noticeable. Picosecond flash photolysis on copolymer solutions demonstrated that the lowest energy excited singlet state undergoes rapid internal conversion with little or no triplet yield. The observed short singlet lifetime (∼25 ps) is undoubtedly responsible for the photostability of this copolymer system. Analysis of the surface exposed to ultraviolet irradiation indicates some photooxidative degradation of the methyl methacrylate portion of the copolymer, but the surface 2(2-hydroxy-5-vinylphenyl)2H-benzotriazoles of the macromolecules remain unchanged.

The reactivity of polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydroxyl groups was studied by acylation with benzoyl bromide in the presence of a catalyst (tributylamine). The reaction rate constants were calculated for all forms of H-complexes in PEG solutions in CCl4and dioxane.

摘要:
Naphthenic acids and alcohols were prepared by oxidation of naphthenes. Four different high molecular weight phthalates of the types bis-2-naphthene carboxyethyl phthalate and ethylene glycol bis(naphthenyl phthalate). These high molecular weight phthalates and di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP), as a reference commercial plasticizer, were compounded with poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) and evaluated as plasticizers. The high molecular weight phthalates were more sensitive to soapy water than DNOP. Volatility and resistance to kerosene extraction studies were markedly better than for DNOP. The new plasticizers have good compatibility with PVC resin.

Acid-catalyzed polycondensation of phenol and crotonaldehyde results in soluble thermoplastic resins over a broad range of compositions. The thermal and curing behavior of the resins are found to vary markedly with the phenol to crotonaldehyde mole ratio and the purity of crotonaldehyde. Infrared analysis of the resins and their fractions separated by column chromatography indicates that all the resins are structurally similar. The number-average molecular weights of the resins fall in the range of 400 to 600. The resins from distilled crotonaldehyde exhibit higher molecular weights than those from crude crotonaldehyde. The thermal properties of the resins are comparable to the Novolak-type phenol-formaldehyde resins. The thermoplastic nature is retained even at higher fraction of crotonaldehyde, unlike for the conventional Novolak resins.

摘要:
Hydrophilic copolymers containing 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), thymine, or adenine were prepared by the free-radical copolymerization of methacryloyl-type monomers containing them with water-soluble vinyl monomers such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, vinylpyrroli-done, acrylamide, and 4(5)-vinylimidazole with AIBN as initiator. Complex formation between the copolymers and RNA and between the copolymers having complementary nucleic acid bases in aqueous solution and a DMSO-ethylene glycol was studied by means of UV spectroscopy. These copolymers were found to release the N-hydroxyethyl derivatives of 5-FU, thymine, or adenine by hydrolysis of the ester of the polymer side chain under mild conditions. The effects of the kind of water-soluble comonomer, temperature, pH, and the imidazole group as catalyst on the hydrolysis of the ester are discussed.

Friedel-Crafts polycondensation of β-resorcylic acid (BRA) with p-xylylene dichloride (PXDC) or 4,4′-dichloromethyldiphenyl ether (DDE) in dioxane could be effected without simultaneous decarboxylation of BRA. The similar polycondensation of BRA with PXDC, DDE, or 4,4′-dichloroacetyldiphenyl ether (DADE) in nitrobenzene or in the absence of solvent at 150°C was associated with decarboxylation of BRA. Polymers having structures isomeric with those of the polycondensation product of BRA formed with subsequent in situ decarboxylation were prepared by Friedel-Crafts polycondensation of resorcinol with the above dichlorides. All the polymer samples were characterized, and those with related structures were compared. The ion-exchange properties of the polymer sample prepared from BRA and DDE in dioxane were studied.
