An electrochemical technique, oxygen polarography, was used to characterize the mass transfer coefficient for diffusion of oxygen to the surface of a circular cathode in a stagnation flow; because the electrical current output depended upon the magnitude of the impinging velocity, this method could form the basis of an electrochemical velocity probe. Four cathode assemblies consisted of 1.28 cm diameter/2.54 cm long polymethylmethacrylate rods with a circular cathode of diameter 1.28 cm, 0.64 cm, 0.32 cm or 0.13 cm vacuum deposited on their flat surface. Each cathode assembly was placed in a 2.54 cm diameter flow loop such that a fully-developed flow (8000 ≥ Reynolds number ≥ 200) of aerated saline solution impinged upon the cathode surface

摘要:
Steady, single-phase transport characterized by high eddy diffusivity in axial direction is a special case of vessel transport phenomena which has not been studied systematically so far. In the present paper, experiments are reported for a Gorter-Mellink duct, at zero net mass flow, covering turbulent eddy transport in cold He4pressurized beyond its thermodynamic critical pressure above 4 K. Axial transport in vertical direction is induced by gravitational buoyancy. A new phenomenological equation is proposed on the basis of quantum fluid convection postulated originally for He II below the lambda point (Goner and Mellink, 1949). Our data agree reasonably with the equation.

An experimental facility is described which enables the power drawn by each of two impellers to be determined separately by means of strain gauges. In addition by using a flat-bottomed Perspex vessel in a square Perspex water jacket, good bulk flow visualisation is achieved. By means of a derotational prism and a TV camera, good pictures of flows relative to impeller blades are possible. Examples of the quality of pictures obtainable is given for a Rushton turbine and 45° pitch blade turbine in water and for a Rushton turbine in a pseudoplastic, viscoelastic C.M.C. solution.

摘要:
Theoretical effect of mass transfer by reversible cyclic chemical reactions is studied in this paper. On the basis of the film theory, an analytical equation has been derived to express the enhancement factor of gas absorption with first-order reversible cyclic chemical reactions. The finite difference method has been used to study the enhancement of gas absorption with second-order reversible cyclic reactions. The results indicate that the gas absorption rate is enhanced by the forward reaction rate, while is suppressed by the backward reaction. Although the diffusivity has some effects on enhancement factor, the influence is not as much as that of reaction rate. The theoretical equations are used to predict the enhancement factors for absorptions of carbon dioxide in acidic solution and l-butene in liquid phosphoric acid.

摘要:
The problem of formulation of appropriate boundary conditions for periodic flow fields is investigated. Sufficient conditions are established for the uniqueness of solutions for the creeping flow of Newtonian fluids through periodically constricted tubes. A perturbation solution is developed for the Newtonian periodic flow problem for an arbitrary boundary shape with sufficiently small axial variations in tube radius. The nonuniqueness of solutions to periodic flow problems when an insufficient number of periodic boundary conditions are imposed is illustrated.

The dry reaction between SO2and limestone has been investigated at low temperatures. The study was focused on the wet-dry scrubbing application. Parameters investigated included: temperature: 313–353 K, SO2concentration: 50–4000 ppm, oxygen concentration: 0–9 percent, carbon dioxide concentration: 0–10 percent, relative humidity 0–92 percent, limestone panicle diameter: 4–100 microns, and limestone conversion: 0–95 percent. The study has revealed that the relative humidity, the particle diameter and the limestone conversion have the most dramatic impacts on the reaction rate. A suggested reaction mechanism is outlined in great detail.
