摘要:
AbstractIt is proposed that there is need for special addiction resource units within hospitals. Persons with special competence concerning alcohol and other drug‐related problems could then assist other staff to respond effectively to the presence of such problems in their patients. The need for such units is convassed, together with reasons why they have not been developed. A number of secondary benefits relating to the function of these units is describe

摘要:
AbstractAlcohol treatment facilities, traditionally located in psychiatric hospitals, have in Australia recently been located in community health centres. More recently, New South Wales has adopted an hospital‐based system, thus gaining access to the large numbers of patients with problems related to alcohol and other drugs. This location also facilitates the task of changing medical and nursing attitudes which is an important long‐term goal. During an economic recession, hospital‐based alcohol and drug departments may be more protected than those based elsewhere. The importance of a teaching hospital base for public education is also disc

摘要:
AbstractFor some years the hospital executive and staff had been aware of the problems caused by alcohol in the community, and of the importance of alcohol abuse as a cause of hospital admissions. A meeting was held in November 1978, to discuss the setting up of an alcohol treatment program, and an alcohol program committee was formed. It consisted of hospital executives, doctors, nurses, community health staff and members of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and was responsible for drawing up the Alcohol Withdrawal Program used at the hospital. The program attempts to use the crisis of withdrawal to motivate the sick alcoholic into a change of attitude and hopefully a successful induction into AA. No drugs are used. Instead, AA members sit with the patient and help them through the crisis. The functions of the Alcohol Program Committee are briefly described.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper commences with a brief historical review of addiction intervention in the New England Region of New South Wales. The concept and role of a hospital‐based assessment unit and the philosophical premises underlying its functioning are discussed briefly. The implementation of a pilot service at the Armidale and New England Hospital is outlined and some of the dilemmas encountered in consolidating the service are highlighted. Some future issues are examine

摘要:
AbstractThis paper describes the role and function of the Liaison Nurse as a specialist nurse in Drugs and Alcohol in a major teaching hospital setting. It argues that the Liaison Nurse can stimulate change by supporting and facilitating the role of the general nurse as an early detection and intervention agent in a patient population with alcohol and other drug related disorders.

摘要:
AbstractOperation Grogcount, a scheme which involves the compulsory, routine recording of alcohol intake of all adult in‐patients, was commenced at Royal Newcastle Hospital in 1979. The effect of this scheme on the alcohol recording rate is reviewed and the difficulties encountered outlined. Operation Grogcount has doubled the percentage of files containing a quantitative assessment of alchol consumption. It has also increased the identification rate of hazardous drinkers. Suggestions are made for extending the impact of Operation Grogcount on identified hazardous drinker

摘要:
AbstractA non‐medical detoxification centre was established at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1981. In the first six months, 499 patients were admitted a total of 906 times: 22% of admissions were referred by medical officers and 49% of patients were referred for further rehabilitation. Only 6% of admissions needed to be referred to the Emergency Department for medical examination. Non‐medical detoxification units can complement the other services offered at a general hospi
