摘要:
&NA;This article discusses the merits of participation by medical examiners in the area of clinical forensic medicine. The present connotation that we deal after the fact should be abandoned with enhanced involvement in assisting the living. The paper focuses on a broad range of categories where forensic scientists by virtue of their training and experience could be most helpful in the application of medical knowledge to the solution of questions of law.

摘要:
&NA;The authors describe the aspect of the dermal surface in firearm wounds. In entrance wounds, the abraded area is rather evident, with loss of the papillary pattern and lacerations of the basement membrane. Exit wounds appear as irregularly lacerated interruptions, with protruding collagen fibers; the surrounding dermis has nearly undamaged papillae. Also described, still on the dermal surface, are the flame effect and the powder tattooing. Evident lesions of the basement membrane, produced by the grains of powder, can be observed. Particles [gunshot residues (GSR)] are often recognizable lying on the dermal surface or entrapped among the collagen fibers of the superficial dermis.

摘要:
&NA;It may be difficult to distinguish industrial accidents from suicide attempts or even assaults or homicide. Nail guns are relatively new industrial tools that can produce severe or fatal injuries. The configuration of the nail on patients' radiographs after such injuries can be helpful in determining the cause of injury. Steel nails that are bent are due to a ricochet and thus indicate accidental injury. Straight‐nail injuries to the co‐workers of nail‐gun users are most likely due to over‐penetration of the substance being nailed or accidental mid‐air firing; however, intentional injury cannot be ruled out. Extremity injuries caused by straight steel nails in nail gun users are the result of carelessness or poor technique, but suicide should be considered when straight nails cause wounds to the chest, head, or abdomen.

摘要:
&NA;A system is described for coding of anatomic—including forensic—pathologic diagnoses from necropsy cases using a microcomputer. The SNOMED software from the College of American Pathologists is utilized. RAM‐disk software is employed to enhance the speed of operation of the system. The microcomputer can be operated by clerical staff versed in medical terminology. Speed of entry and retrieval, with minimal manual interaction, is an important aspect of operation. Equipment and storage costs are minimal.

摘要:
&NA;By use of a special optical device coupled with a TV camera to match a skull and a photograph of a face, superimposition for the purpose of personal identification was performed in controlled situations. A computer‐aided method to evaluate the fit of the superimposition has been outlined by means of an original Shape Analytical Morphometry (SAM) software package yielding analytical descriptions bykth‐order polynominal equations and Fourier harmonic analysis. The match was carried out by using point‐cross error and sum of differences for the Fourier set amplitude. A final comprehensive evaluation exhibited marked differences between congruent and noncongruent superimpositions.

&NA;Deliberate inhalation of metallic paint results in hemorrhagic alveolitis and the intra‐alveolar and lymph node accumulation of particulate‐laden macrophages. We present a case of a chronic paint sniffer that illustrates these respiratory tract findings.

摘要:
&NA;The practice of forensic pathology finds itself in the unenviable position of existing in a political environment, the existence of which depends upon compromise. The professional pathologist cannot compromise ethically, morally, or legally. As a practical fact of life, most of us find ourselves in the compromising position and with the compromising attitude of “you get what you pay for.” The end result all too often is tragedy for those who depend on our observations, our conclusions, our practice of medicine. What has not been widely recognized apparently is the all too common consequence of the personal jeopardy that the forensic pathologist is placed in—defenseless, friendless, disgraced, and left with a severely tarnished professional reputation.
