Toxicology studies can contribute much to investigations into the causes of accidents. This paper examines toxicological data from 485 fatal aircraft accidents over a 24-year period in terms of relevance to causing accidents and difficulties in procuring samples for analysis.

A 27-year-old male committed suicide by ingestion of a large quantity of xylene. The presence of xylene in the tissues of the victim was confirmed by chromatographic and spectrometric techniques. High levels of xylene were detected in blood (11 mg/dl), gastric contents (880 mg/dl) duodenal contents (3,300 mg/dl). Histological examination of the lungs showed severe congestion and acute pulmonary edema. Review of the relevant literature is presented.

This report covers the murder of 13 Oriental adults in Seattle, Washington, on February 19, 1983. The victims were patrons of a local gambling club and were murdered systematically during a robbery. This report highlights the management of multiple homicide victims and illustrates intersting features which were developed during the investigation.

The authors observed, with a scanning electron microscope, the dermal surgaces of experimental wounds, following the enzymatic digestion with trypsin of the dermo-epidermal junction. Cut lesions showed an early reconstitution of the basement membrane and progressive convergence of the margins. A peculiar arrangement of the dermal crests was also observed. In wounds with loss of substance, the complete coating by newly formed basement membrane took longer. There was an early deformation of the holes of hair follicles in the undamaged dermis surrounding the lesion, as well as the appearance of creases that moved toward the center. This process was over within a few days; then the lesion became very small and the holes of the hair follicles reappeared. The results suggest a force of traction bound toward the center of the lesion and acting on the surface, the effects of which on the basement membrane are most evident between the eighth and the 15th days.

A 34-year-old man with allergic asthma died an (instantaneous) sudden cardiac death as a result of multiple myocardial infarcts. These occurred in the absence of coronary atherosclerosis. The major mechanism by which the infarcts occurred was recurrent coronary artery spasm. The latter can occur spontaneously, asthma patients being particularly prone to it. However, various medications prescribed by different physicians may also have played a role.

A 16-year-old male passenger involved in an automobile accident was observed at autopsy to have total avulsion of the heart from its vascular connections and severe unilateral pulmonary edema. The nature of the injuries and the circumstances of the accident revealed that this finding was not an indication of survival of even limited duration. The possible pathogenesis of the pulmonary edema in the context of the injuries received by the victim are discussed.

Scene investigation is an important part of the medicolegal autopsy. In many cases of death cannot be determined without knowledge of the circumstances. A case is presented in which the diagnosis of compression asphyxia and smothering was made only after analysis of the scene findings.
