摘要:
&NA;The inquest upon a dead body is the basis of the scientific crime investigation and administration of criminal justice. The pivotal issue in any inquest is the initial visualization of the body and its surroundings at the scene of incident by a team of investigators and experts. This must be carried out meticulously, since the subsequent course of the case, and its success or failure in the court of justice, essentially depends upon its proper execution. Unfortunately, such an important step as the inquest is generally the most neglected part of any crime investigation process as it exists in India today. It is quite often left entirely to the inspired guesswork and seasoned experience of the lowest ranking police officers and more often than not to a Head Constable of a police station or substation. Nevertheless, while the coroner's system has proved to be utterly unsuitable for Indian conditions, we have failed to find an alternative solution to the growing challenge of scientific crime investigation in India, by involving the forensic pathologist in inquests held upon dead bodies, by including him in the first crime investigation. A strong case is made for adoption of the medical examiner's system of inquest, wherein the forensic pathologist plays the pivotal role and leads the “unnatural death investigation team.”

摘要:
&NA;A case of fatal poisoning due to the combined effect of alcohol and gasoline following an automobile accident is described. Toxicological analyses by means of gas chromatography and gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry permitted the identification and quantitation of alcohol and several hydrocarbons in the heart blood and in the gas in the lung. Great variation was found in the estimates of blood gasoline concentration, depending on which of six constitutents of gasoline was chosen for quantitation. The cause of this variation is discussed, together with the possible mechanisms leading to death.

摘要:
&NA;The dermal surface (after enzymatic digestion of the dermoepidermal junction) in electric and heat lesions is described. There do not appear to be elements that help in forming a precise differential diagnosis. It is possible, however, to differentiate these lesions from all traumatic cutaneous injuries and some limited nontraumatic lesions (e.g., verrucae). Remarkably good preservation of the dermal surface even in an advanced state of decomposition does suggest the possibility of certain diagnosis of electric and heat lesions even when postomortem phenomena have greatly damaged or even totally removed the epithelial part of the skin.

摘要:
&NA;A case of forensic identification utilizing the vascular grooves within the skull is presented. The case is unique in that the antemortem radiographs were from childhood, rendering useless the more standard points of comparison. Calvarial vascular grooves represent unique points of comparison when the only available premortem radiographs were obtained during childhood, especially when one is attempting to identify children (living or dead).

摘要:
&NA;This case report describes a highly unusual way of committing suicide: the insertion of a cylindrical foreign body through the penile urethra, resulting in perforation of the urinary bladder and abdominal hemorrhage. The manner of death was determined by a psychological autopsy that successfully ruled out an autoerotic (accidental) death. The case is presented in order to alert medical examiners and psychiatrists that such a unique and painful method of taking one's life exists.

摘要:
&NA;Graves' disease is a form of hyperthyroidism. A rare complication of Graves' disease is thyrotoxic crisis. Although the crisis is frequently fatal, it is a distinctly unusual cause of sudden death. We investigated the case of a young woman with Graves' disease who died suddenly. Radioimmunoassay tests of thyroid function were used to establish the diagnosis.
