摘要:
Three instances of the use of entomological techniques for the estimation of postmortem interval in homicide cases on the island of Oahu, Hawaiian Islands, are presented. These cases represent differing stages of decomposition and range from 8 to 53 days postmortem.

摘要:
Surveys of medical examiners' records have shown that as many as one- third of suicide victims have serious physical illnesses. We report the case of a 56-year-old woman who committed suicide by drug overdose. At autopsy, she had severe widespread periarteritis nodosa, which had been unsuspected during life. The identificatioin of treatable physical illness in suicide victims is important in suicide prevention, yet such illness may be overlooked after death unless a forensic autopsy is performed.

摘要:
There is an extensive body of literature dealing with the use of art in the evaluation and therapy of psychiatric patients. In this case study, principles drewn from art therapy and Jung's writings on mandalas were used to draw a personality profile and to make a tentative diagnosis in a 36-year-old white man who had committed suicide in Mobile, Alabama. It is felt by the authors that art analysis can be a valuable tool in forensic psychiatry.

摘要:
A 3-year -old child died of the combined effects of a bacterial susperinfection and a relative overdose of hydrocodone prescribed for a cough due to a presumed viral respiratory tract infection. This case illustrates the importance of evaluating the effects of prescribed medication in assessing the cause and mechanism of death in children dying suddelbly of presumed natural disease.

摘要:
We here report an unusual, apparently accidental death, in which weakness associated with a progressive neuromuscular disease, Friedreich's ataxia, apparently resulted in the drowning of the deceased. The possibility of neuromuscular disease as a rare cause of drownings should be overlooked.

摘要:
Cysts of the larynx are uncommon lesions that on rare occasions may cause sudden death. We report herein the asphyxial death by an obstructing vocal cord cyst in a woman whose body was found in a setting that aroused suspicions of foul play. Features of this case and the autopsy findings are compared with a literaqture review of laryngeal cysts.

摘要:
Train robbery was frequent in the United State from the late 1800s through the 1920s.On October 11, 1923, the southbound Southern Pacific Express was halted by three men at Tunnel 13 in southern Oregon just north of the California line. The railway mail car carrying $40,000 was then blown apart by an explosive charge, killing the clerk and rendering the money unobtainable. The men shot three other train crew members before escaping into the mountains. The investigation was headed by Chief Agent Dan O'Connell, who soon asked that California criminalist, Edward Heinrich, examine soiled overalls found nearby. Using primarily botanical evidence, Heinrich identifed them as those of a woodsman, leading to the identification of three Oregon d'Autremont brothers as suspects. After an intensive manhunt, one was captured 3 years later in the philippines and was tried and found guilty. The twins, captured in Ohio, then pleaded guilty. This crime, typical of those in which unforeseen events lead the perpetrators to panic and to murder, helped to establish criminology and particularly botancal studies as valid scientific disciplines. Its investigation and solution also remain models of scientific crime detection.

摘要:
Two hundred seventy-five United States coins were discovered in the stomach of a mentally disturbed individual at autopsy. Many coins contaning copper were corroded by prolonged contact with gastric juice, with subsequent absorption and deposition of copper in the liver and kidneys. The patient died from complications related to the acute toxic phase of chronic copper poisoning.A discussion of the case, foreign-body ingestion, gastric bazoars and the mechanism of copper toxicity is presented. To our knowledge, this is the first death due to copper intoxication following a massive ingestion of coins.
