Cholesterol estimations were performed on blood collected postmortem from a group of subjects coming to autopsy and showing that they had had a high risk for hypercholesterolaemia, and from an unselected group of subjects dying in hospital. Subjects from the first group had apparently been healthy, aged < 45 years, had had no known risk factors for hyperlipidaemia, and showed extensive coronary artery atheroma (stenosis > 50% by diameter). Eleven cases from 485 consecutive autopsies fulfilled these criteria; three showed considerable hypercholesterolaemia (11.2, 11.8, and 21.6 mmol/L). Family studies confirmed the diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia in one case; the other two remain unproven. Cholesterol measurement by cholesterol oxidase and quinoneimine dye production is subject to interference by haemolysis; provided that serum haemoglobin is < 200 mg/ dl, the cholesterol underestimate is < 5%. The decline in serum cholesterol in the group of unselected subjects was 1.7 (0.3- 4.9) mmol/L, 50.4 (28-84) h postmortem. Results are means and ranges for seven subjects. Measurement of cholesterol in serum obtained postmortem (provided that the sample is not grossly haemolysed) is a valid approximation of antemortem levels: this measurement should be made when autopsy reveals evidence of premature coronary heart disease. If hypercholesterolaemia is discovered, the diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia, a common genetic disorder inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion, should be considered and appropriate family studies instituted

This study is based on an examination of lung tissue from 11 cases of traumatic immediate death with fracture. According to our investigation, pulmonary bone marrow embolic phenomena, such as megakaryocytes associated with fat globules in pulmonary arterioles and a megakaryocyte embolism in a pulmonary capillary, develop in most traumatic immediate death cases with fracture. From the results, we suggest that these pulmonary bone marrow embolic phenomena can be certain evidence of antemortem violence in traumatic immediate death cases

Urine specimens were collected from alleged rape survivors. In 13 of the 29 survivors, creatinine levels were over 150 mg/dl, and nine of these were over 200 mg/dl. These elevated urine creatinine levels persisted for some time after the alleged rape attacks. Various controls yielded overall levels below those of the alleged rape assault survivors. When control values of creatinine and osmolality of pre- and postintercourse samples were plotted and compared by linear regression covariance analysis to the data on alleged rape survivors, the levels of urinary creatinine in the alleged rape survivors were higher than would have been expected from urine osmolality increases. The dissimilarity of the two sets of data has apvalue < 0.0001. These findings might serve as supplemental objective evidence of rape (or terror) that could be used medicolegally

The purpose of this study is to review retrospectively the deaths that have occured in the Shelby County detention center from 1970 to 1985. The Shelby County data are compared and contrasted with other studies to discern significant and preventable causes of death in custody. This study confirmed natural causes as most prevalent; however, suicide accounted for > 20% of all deaths (15-50-fold greater than the general population). Suicide occured by hanging in > 90% of cases. This is a preventable cause of death while in custody, and means of prevention are addressed
