摘要:
An example of the forensic scientist's role in the confirmational hazard is discussed. The active participation of Dr. Gettler in the detection of radioactive substances in the watch dial industry lead to the removal of this hazard and a healthier work place.

摘要:
Biological response to environmental toxins results from the sum of natural, environmental, avocational, inapparent, and occupational exposures. These external exposures result in acceptable or unacceptable levels of absorption or internal exposure based on anticipated biological effects. There is no level of exposure which is in and of itself synonymous with intoxication. Biological effects may be classified as physiologic or pathologic, adaptive or nonadaptive, respectively. In each instance, the response may be acceptable or unacceptable. Intoxication requires the demonstration of a significant impairment of health. One may have an unacceptable pathologic response and still not have intoxication. Professional judgement is required.

摘要:
The hazards associated with occupational exposure to various workplace contaminants (lead, silica, etc.) have been known for a number of years. Until recently, the potential toxic effects of exposures on the male reproductive system had not been appreciated. This article not only discusses recent studies in that area, but gives clinical examples of how environmental exposures (water, soil, air, and dwellings) can affect various organs in the human body. Awareness that these injuries can occur without obvious relationship to these environmental exposures may help the forensic pathologist discover previously unsuspected hazards.

摘要:
Review of the available literature on dioxin over the last several years is reported. There has been considerable writing on the subject, but extraction of true scientific data from emotionalism and sensationalism remains difficult. We must continue to remain alert to potential hazards steming from this herbicidal chemical and await more definitive and conclusive studies than have been published to date.

摘要:
Reye's syndrome. encephalopathy and fatty change in the liver and other viscera, typically occurs suddenly in infants and children recovering from a viral illness, particularly influenza or varicella, Its rapid clinical course may suggest a drug-related insult and the differential diagnosis includes a variety of toxins. There are grounds for suspicion that exogenous substances– in-cluding aspirin–may be cofactors with recent viral illness in the syndrome's pathogenesis. For these reasons, medical examiners may be called upon to rule the diagnosis in or out, to assess the possibility of direct toxic injury, or to document presence or absence of possible cofactors. With these tasks in mind, this review summarizes the diagnostic, pathologic, and laboratory findings of Reye's syndrome and considers the roles of viral infection, heritable predispositions. and exogenous toxins in its causation. It singles out salicylate treatment for special considerations as a possible cofactor, and concludes with a suggested approach to the forensic medical investigation of possible cases of Reye's syndrome.

摘要:
Environmental pathology provides the opportunity for the pathologist to enter the mainstream of medical diagnosis and treatment through the application of his special skills and knowledge to the problems of the patient as created by his exposure to the environment.
