In brief: Twenty-three Ladies Professional Golf Association tour players were assessed for height, weight, resting heart rate and blood pressure, percent body fat by skinfold, hand grip strength, and VO2max estimated from treadmill time using the Bruce protocol. They were compared with female nonathletes of similar age and with other female athletes. In addition, the top, middle, and lower thirds of the list of players ranked according to money earned playing golf in 1981 were compared. Golfers in the top and middle groups had significantly stronger left-hand grip strength; the top group had greater VO2max and lower percent body fat than the lower group.

In brief: The responses of four interior linemen and four backs were compared during an hour of treadmill walking in a football uniform at 25% of VO2max in a control environment (25 C dry bulb, 48% relative humidity) and a hot, wet environment (35 C dry bulb, 80% relative humidity. After the work session each subject completed two 75-second sprints at 8 mph. The linemen's VO2max was significantly lower and their percent body fat was greater than that of the backs. At the end of the experimental sessions there were significant differences in percent of heat load stored, rectal temperature, heart rate, and mean skin temperature, indicating that the linemen were not able to regulate body temperature as well as the backs in the hot environment.

In brief: Sixty-four third-grade children participated in a ten-month (September to June), four-day-a-week fitness program (ten minutes of stretching and strength development exercises followed by 12 minutes of running). A control group of 45 children was allowed free play during this time. In June the experimental group completed a 1,600-meter run significantly faster than the control group. In the experimental group, boys had significantly greater improvements than girls. Exercise heart rates expressed as a percentage of predicted maximal heart rate showed no significant changes in control subjects, but in the experimental group, girls had increases from 73.7% to 80.5% and boys from 73.1% to 87.7% of maximal heart rate.

In brief: To compare the cardiorespiratory responses to arm vs leg exercise in women with those previously reported for men, ten healthy women (mean age 29.8 years) underwent separate arm and leg ergometer tests to measure oxygen consumption (VO2) during submaximal and maximal exercise. VO2during arm exercise was greater than that during leg exercise at any given submaximal work load. At maximal exercise, however, cardiorespiratory responses were generally greater during leg exercise. VO2max during arm and leg ergometry was 1.60 and 2.02 liters·min−1, respectively. Although women have a lower arm VO2max than men, it appears that their aerobic capacity for arm work is not disproportionately inferior to men's.

In brief: Jock itch is an inflammatory skin condition of the groin. There is a burning itch of the inner thighs, the skin is tender, and the athlete is usually unable to be fully active. There are three major types: mechanical intertrigo (chafing), dermatophytosis (superficial fungus infection), and candidiasis (yeast infection). To prevent jock itch, the athlete should wear loose-fitting clothes that do not bind in the groin and keep the area clean, dry, and cool. Cool compresses will relieve swelling and inflammation. Low-potency steroid creams will help relieve inflammation, but stronger ones should be avoided because they may cause atrophic striae.

In brief: Thirty-six long-distance runners suffering from iliotibial band friction syndrome were treated and followed for at least one year. Treatment consisted of icing, stretching, changing to soft running shoes that were modified to correct leg-length discrepancies and increase pronation at the ankle, running on soft surfaces, avoiding downhill and sidehill running, and temporarily decreasing mileage. Most subjects (58%) were symptom-free within three weeks, and 83% were symptom-free within six months. The authors identified several etiological factors (inadequate or excessive pronation and hard running surfaces and shoes) and concluded that leg-length discrepancies may not contribute to iliotibial band friction syndrome. They suggest conservative treatment, reserving hydrocortisone injections, orthoses, and surgery for resistant cases.

In brief: Twenty-two middle-aged men participated in a two-month aerobic dance program involving at least three 45-minute sessions per week. Resting heart rate, body weight, and total serum cholesterol level decreased significantly after the program. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol values did not change significantly, which may relate to the subjects' level of alcohol consumption. Results indicated that participating in an aerobic dance program can improve both physiological and metabolic characteristics of cardiovascular fitness.

In brief: Football at any level—sandlot, high school, college, or professional—is a collision sport. Any part of the body may encounter varying degrees of trauma during play. When the cervical spine is injured, the result can be lethal. Players use the head as a weapon, although the action is illegal and can cause extension, forced-flexion, lateralflexion, or compression injuries to the cervical spine. An individually fitted cervical collar helps protect players from reinjury. Harvard University football players have used it since 1972 and have found it effective. It is inexpensive and easy to make.
