摘要:
In brief: The author reviews the key research on the physiological determinants of distance running performance and presents a simple model that he thinks should serve as a basis for hypothesis testing in the future. The model has three primary determinants: aerobic capacity relative to body weight, running economy, and the percentage of aerobic capacity used during a race. The author says that the model applies equally to elite runners and recreational joggers and suggests that systematic efforts are needed to translate research findings to a form that is meaningful to clinicians, coaches, and athletes.

摘要:
In brief: Overuse injuries of the knee are becoming more common because there are more runners and they are running more often and farther. The authors describe the different kinds of overuse injuries of the knee, including iliotibial band syndrome, popliteal tendinitis, jumper's knee, and others. They also describe treatment for 329 patients with knee injuries over an 11-month period.

摘要:
In brief: This article describes the treatment and prevention of the most common skin problems in wrestling. Infections are treated with bactericidal soap and antibiotics, and infected wrestlers should not have contact with teammates or the mat until the infection heals. Scabies is treated with crotamiton or gamma benzene hexachloride. Abrasions should be cleaned and protected with sterile pads, and lacerations should be closed with butterflies and sutured after the match. Ice should be applied immediately to contusions, and after the pain has subsided, local heat may speed absorption of the hematoma. Prevention includes keeping the mat clean, using proper hygiene, and wearing protective equipment.

摘要:
In brief: The potential for head injury exists in almost all sports. The classification of head injury helps the clinician in evaluation and management, but no system is universally accepted. The authors propose a new system specifically based on sports-related minor head injury and present guidelines for specific management of each grade of minor brain injury.

摘要:
In brief: This case report looks at the treatment and rehabilitation of a Major League Baseball pitcher with myofascial pain syndrome and acute recurrent somatic dysfunction. Throughout the baseball season the patient had a dull aching pain in the neck and upper back that worsened as he tired, and his performance and playing time declined severely. Through a comprehensive rehabilitation and reconditioning program that included strengthening his weaker shoulder and arm, increasing the flexibility of the overdeveloped pitching arm, correcting the somatic dysfunction, and gradually releasing the myofascial trigger areas, the pitcher was able to return to his profession.

摘要:
In brief: This review of the literature indicates that transcutaneous electrical muscle stimulation may retard disuse atrophy in immobilized limbs. Study results are inconsistent because of different stimulus characteristics, stimulation and exercise regimens, testing situations, and subjects. Recently developed portable stimulators can be used for longer periods and can be incorporated into casts. More research is needed to determine the precise effects of continuous electrical stimulation and the best way to apply it.

摘要:
In brief: A total of 348 coaches, 179 athletic trainers, and 2,977 athletes in high school and college settings answered questionnaires about their nutrition knowledge and practices. Certified athletic trainers had the best nutrition backgrounds, and they believed they should take primary responsibility for athletes' nutrition. Coaches and athletic trainers are most concerned about fluid intake, but athletes are most concerned about weight. Most athletes are familiar with and use the basic four food groups, but 44% take vitamin supplements, 13% take mineral supplements, and 9% take protein supplements.

摘要:
Sometimes position stands or policy statements are sleepy papers that are read by few before they are forgotten or need updating. But sometimes they raise professional and public eyebrows and contribute to change.
