摘要:
In brief:A common overuse injury associated with bicycling is ulnar neuropathy (handlebar palsy). The cyclist will notice the onset of numbness, weakness, and loss of coordination in one or both hands, usually after several days of cycling. Several corrective measures are suggested, including well-padded bicycling gloves, padded handlebars, correct frame size, correct distance from seat to stem, and frequent changing of hand position on the handlebars. If the pain cannot be alleviated by these measures, the cyclist should stop until improvement occurs.

摘要:
In brief:The author presents case reports of 19 judo fatalities. Five deaths were due to brain injury, four to cervical fracture-dislocations, five to cardiac problems, and five to miscellaneous causes. Judo can be blamed for 10 of the 19 deaths. Cardiac deaths do not appear to be preventable, because potentially fatal cardiac disease may not be evident until the fatal episode. However, strict enforcement of rules and safety precautions can prevent most serious injuries.

摘要:
In brief:About 4% of the athletes with foot problems seen by the authors had cuboid syndrome. The authors say the syndrome is common but that many cases are not recognized or are misdiagnosed. In their experience, it occurs most often in pronated feet, and pain results from a partial displacement of the cuboid, which prevents its normal range of motion. The pain is relieved by manipulating the cuboid to restore its normal position. A cuboid pad or low-dye strapping help prevent recurrences. Orthotics may be necessary to correct excessive pronation of the feet.

摘要:
In brief:The accurate assessment of muscular strength, endurance, power, and flexibility through quantitative testing is important in the evaluation and rehabilitation of injured athletes. Test results must be compared to normal values to be properly interpreted. If healthy baseline data on an individual athlete is not available, the next most specific set of data would be a profile derived from athletes of the same sport, competitive level, and playing position. Inter-extremity comparisons are useful, but may be misleading even with unilateral involvement.

摘要:
In brief: Forest Service fire-fighting crews were tested for aerobic fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and body fat. They were also tested on various work tasks such as building a fireline and carrying a 45-lb load, which were chosen to represent common fire-fighting tasks. Age, ethnic, and racial groups were similar in test and work task scores, but women did not score as well as men. The tests correlated to the actual work done, and the author concluded that minimum levels of strength and endurance are needed to perform this work successfully.

摘要:
In brief:Successful long-distance running is often attributed to a high VO2max, but running economy—the steady-state oxygen consumption at a given speed—may be more important. The physiological changes in a 31-year-old elite runner were studied during an 18-week training program using both interval and endurance running. Most improvements in running economy were noted during or immediately after weeks of increased interval training. Among runners of similar ability, a small difference in economy can make a large difference in finishing time in races longer than 10,000 meters.

摘要:
In brief:Ten recreational runners and squash players were monitored with telemetry to determine their heart rate response to the two activities. The authors found that even though squash is a discontinuous exercise, the mean heart rate intensity in the squash sessions was very similar to the mean heart rate intensity while running. Therefore, health professionals can indicate that squash play with a partner of equal ability and fitness level has aerobic benefits similar to running.

摘要:
A controversial theory that bite splints and corrective mouth guards can improve athletic performance has some professionals arguing about the role of dentists and mouth protection in sports.
