摘要:
In brief: Fifty-one female professional golfers and 142 female amateur golfers were evaluated for skin cancer and skin cancer risk. The professionals were considerably younger than the amateurs (average of 28.4 vs 54.5 years) and received five times as much sun exposure as the amateurs. Four of the professionals had already developed basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Their average age was 25.5 years. Eleven amateurs also developed BCC, but their average age was 51.4 years. This study suggests that skin cancer can develop at earlier ages when sun exposure has been heavy. The likelihood of developing a skin I cancer also was related to eye and hair color.

摘要:
In brief: An elevated resting pulse rate is generally considered a marker of overtraining in endurance athletes who greatly increase their workout distance. This study supports that assumption, demonstrating increased morning heart rates in 12 men who ran twice their regular training mileage during a 500-km (312-mile) road race over 20 days. After the first week of running, morning pulse rates were slightly reduced, but thereafter they progressively increased, becoming 10 beats min−1higher (p<.01) as the race ended. Blood pressure, oral temperature, body weight, sweat loss, and blood glucose, lactate, insulin, and Cortisol levels were not related to the increase in morning heart rate.

摘要:
In brief: The incidence of shoulder pain was studied in 168 male and female swimmers, aged 12 to 23, representing four universities and two clubs. A simple test of shoulder flexibility was administered in October, and team- wide incidence of swimmer's shoulder for the coming winter season was predicted. The predictions proved to be about 93% accurate, clearly showing a strong correlation between lack of flexibility and incidence of swimmer's shoulder. In males, increased incidence of shoulder pain was also related to increased intensity and duration of weight training. The incidence of shoulder pain was not directly dependent on stroke, distance, or sex, with one exception: At a given level of flexibility, butterfly swimmers showed a higher incidence of shoulder pain than other swimmers.

摘要:
In brief: The authors compared the effects of immobilization, early motion, and electrical stimulation on injured tendons in dogs and found that the healed tendons that had had electrical implants were much stronger. Therefore, they have dramatically altered their rehabilitation program for ligament and tendon repair. They implant electrical stimulators during surgery, and the patients are mobilized after one day. The authors say that while patients treated by traditional techniques are experiencing muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, and discomfort, their patients are enjoying greater mobility and earlier return to activities.

摘要:
In brief: The author reviewed the incidence and pattern of injuries sustained by drivers over a nine-year period at Mid-Ohio and Waterford Hills (Michigan) road-racing courses. One death occurred at Mid-Ohio, and eight drivers incurred major injuries. No fatalities occurred at Waterford Hills, but three drivers incurred major injuries. The racing stock sedan was the type of car most frequently involved in accidents in the professional group and the open-wheel car in the amateur group. The most common cause of injury was hitting the steel guardrail. Thus, improvements in corner construction and barrier design may improve track safety in auto road racing.

摘要:
In brief: A college wrestler was first seen by an athletic trainer when he complained of a burning pain in his right foot. He recalled no traumatic event that might have caused the pain. He was referred to the athletic department's consulting podiatrist. An examination showed that the patient's right foot was cool and pale and that the pedal pulses were absent. Immediate referral was made to a vascular surgeon. A right femoral arteriogram showed complete occlusion of a 3.5-cm segment of the popliteal artery. A femoral popliteal artery bypass was performed. The patient recovered fully but was discouraged from participating in competitive sports.

The sports medicine physician has been relatively unscathed by the increasing number of sports injury lawsuits. This good fortune simply reinforces the need to recognize areas of risk and strive for high standards of care.
