摘要:
In brief:More than 42,000 injured horseback riders are treated each year in emergency departments. Although most of the injuries are relatively minor, as many as one third involve the CNS. Neurologic injuries are usually to the head—mostly concussions or cerebral contusions—and commonly occur when a rider falls from the horse. Certain medical conditions, eg, temporary paralysis and posttraumatic epilepsy, contraindicate equestrian activities. The risk of catastrophic injury may be lessened by identifying the persons who should not participate and enforcing the use of protective equipment—particularly adequate headgear.

摘要:
In brief:Three brands of plastic tennis ball containers were tested to determine whether they were safe receptacles for drinking water. The containers were cultured for bacteria and viruses immediately after they were opened. Then they were filled with organic-free water; water samples were analyzed for organic compounds immediately after they were filled, every 30 minutes for two hours, and at 20 hours. Culture results showed that the containers were sterile, but chemical analyses of the water samples yielded low levels of toluene, trichloroethane, and thiocyanic acid. Although the amounts of these compounds were not toxic, the authors recommend that tennis players rinse the containers thoroughly at least once before using them to hold drinking water.

摘要:
In brief:To determine the severity and frequency of soccer-related injuries, the medical charts of 13 soccer players who had sustained blunt trauma to the eye were reviewed. The patients (five girls, eight boys) ranged in age from 8 to 15 years. Hyphema was the most common injury; others included retinal edema, angle recession, secondary glaucoma, and chorioretinal rupture. Six injuries were caused by the ball, three by a kick, and one by a head butt; in three cases the cause was unknown. Education of coaching staff, parents, and officials; protective eye wear; proper conditioning; strictly enforced rules; and an emphasis on having fun would help reduce the number and severity of soccer-related eye injuries.

摘要:
In brief:This case report describes a 32-year-old bodybuilder who sustained an ischemic cerebrovascular accident and showed signs of cardiomyopathy. No cause was found for either condition, but he had been using steroids for 16 years. Questions remain about the association between the two conditions and steroid use, and the full effects of long-term, high-dose steroid use have yet to be elucidated. As steroid use becomes more popular among athletes, the medical community must be alert to the possible adverse effects of these substances.

摘要:
Physicians aren't used to thinking of television as an agent of pediatric disease. However, experts increasingly contend that television may indeed play such a role. The disease: obesity.

摘要:
Well-trained coaches can help reduce the number of injuries and may play key roles in the physical, mental, and social development of athletes. But the problem is in implementing national standards for coaches.
