In briefIn this evaluation of 203 acute epiphyseal fractures in the long bones of 183 patients aged 3 to 18, 79 fractures (39%) were related to the following ten sports activities: football, hockey, basketball, downhill skiing, baseball/softball, wrestling, soccer, gymnastics, tennis, and volleyball. An additional 21 fractures occurred in weight lifting, roller skating, ice skating, and skateboarding. Approximately 50% of the fractures in this urban population were sports- related. The symptoms of epiphyseal fractures are the same as symptoms of fractures or ligament injuries in general. Physicians should always consider the possibility of epiphyseal fracture in adolescent injuries.

In briefThe authors questioned 85 intercollegiate athletes at the University of Washington about breast pain during sports and the kinds of bras they use. Only 20% reported occasional breast pain, usually associated with cold weather or the onset of their menstrual periods. One woman had received a traumatic breast injury during a basketball game, but the area of ecchymosis cleared within ten days. Only 10% of the athletes wore a sports bra. The women stated that bras should be inexpensive, easy to care for, available in many sizes, made of absorbent fabric, and constructed with seamless cups and no irritating clasps.

In briefIn a ten-year study of 70 professional basketball players, 47 sustained 265 injuries that most frequently occurred during early-season games. Centers, who had the highest injury rate, most frequently injured their backs; guards most frequently injured elbows and knees; and forwards most often injured fingers and knees. Strains and sprains were the most common problems. Most injuries resulted from trauma rather than from training or conditioning errors.

In briefThe effect of excess fat weight and equipment weight on skating performance is unclear because much of the player's skating movement is performed in a gliding position. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effect of added weight on a player's skating performance in an ice hockey fitness test. During added-weight conditions, the players were slower and had greater anaerobic endurance times. Coaches and players should be concerned about the players' fat weight and equipment weight because they contribute to slower performance times.

In briefHeight, weight, body density, percent body fat, lean body weight, selected skinfolds, girths, and somatotypes were determined for 72 high school female cross-country runners. The mean body fat (15.3%) was lower than the values typically reported for the female nonathlete in this age- group. This low percent body fat was reflected in the relatively low endomorph component of the total group. The average somatotype of these runners (2.8-3.2-4.0) supports the general concept that distance runners of various ages tend to be more linear and leaner than their nonrunning counterparts.

In briefDirect local application of cold to a soft-tissue injury decreases edema, inflammation, local blood flow, and hemorrhage. It also has a local anesthetic effect and can reduce spasticity during rehabilitation. For therapy, ice or some other cold material is usually applied directly to the skin intermittently for the first 36 hours after an injury. Intermittent application reduces the danger of frostbite and is more comfortable. To avoid further injury, athletes treated with cooling should not resume activity until tissues have rewarmed. Cold therapy should not be used in patients who are unconscious, semiconscious, have collagen diseases, or vasospastic conditions.

In briefThe heart rate responses of 13 professional ballet dancers were monitored during stage performances. When performing allegro (fast tempo) dance variations, heart rates increased rapidly to near-maximal levels. Mean peak heart rate during these dances was 184 beats-min-1, or 94% of the maximum age-predicted heart rate; the highest recorded heart rate was 197 beats-min-1. Accordingly, ballet stage dancing may be categorized as high-intensity, brief-duration exercise.
