摘要:
In brief: Equinus is a deformity in which the foot is plantarflexed either on itself or on the leg. Gastrocnemius and/or soleus equinus can be caused by either an acquired or congenitally short triceps surae. Acquired equinus involves a reduction in the length of the soleus, gastrocnemius, or both. Congenital equinus occurs when the anatomical length is insufficient to allow normal dorsiflexion. Conservative treatment consists of stretching and strengthening exercises, orthotic therapy, heel lifts, shoe modifications, and training recommendations.

摘要:
In brief: To examine the relationship between actual performance times and predicted marathon times calculated from running velocity at the anaerobic threshold (AT), 18 male subjects ran on a treadmill to volitional fatigue. The AT was determined by examining the excess CO2elimination curve. The subjects' average velocity at the AT was 9.22 mph. The average predicted time was 2:53:49, while the average marathon time was 2:52:06. There was a highly significant correlation between the predicted and actual marathon times (r =.94, p<.01). This relationship suggests that running velocity at the AT may be critical in determining efficient running speed during marathons.

摘要:
In brief:American mile record holder Steve Scott was tested for maximal aerobic capacity and running economy on three occasions over nine months, a period that included off-season, preseason, the indoor season, and the early part of the outdoor season. The laboratory results demonstrated that Scott's training raised his maximal aerobic capacity approximately 8% and improved his running economy 5%. In comparing Scott's data with that of former American record holder Jim Ryun, it appears that Scott's better economy, which allowed him to perform at a lower percentage of his maximal aerobic capacity, was the essential difference between the two runners.

摘要:
In brief: Eight male and eight female elite prepubescent tennis players were tested to determine their anthropometric and physiological profiles. No significant differences between girls and boys were found for height weight, bone widths, girth measures, VO2max, maximum aerobic performance, lactacid anaerobic capacity, alactacid anaerobic power, flexibility, muscular endurance, and grip strength in preferred and nonpreferred hands. The girls had a significantly higher level of fat as measured by sum of skinfold thicknesses. Both boys and girls had a significantly higher grip strength in preferred than nonpreferred hands.

摘要:
In brief:Body weight, percent body fat, grip strength, illnesses, energy level, emotional stability, and bowel habits were studied in 104 wrestlers and 73 control subjects at the beginning and end of the 1980–81 and 1981–82 winter wrestling seasons. Wrestlers lost significantly more body fat than controls, and their grip strength and energy levels also decreased. There were no differences between groups in illnesses or emotional stability, but wrestlers' bowel habits were more regular. Emotional stability declined among wrestlers in lower weight classes. Comparisons between weight classes suggest that different growth allowances may be warranted during the season.

摘要:
In brief: This study describes the 1.5-mile test performances of 1,656 young Air Force officers, officer trainees, and cadets who were enrolled in Air Force officer training programs. More than half (51%) of the women performed in Cooper's best category (superior), and 85% were in the top two categories. However, only 25% of the men scored in the superior category, and 65% scored in the top two categories. These results indicate a relatively higher level of aerobic conditioning in the women. Only one woman (0.4%) and three men (0.2%) in the sample failed to meet the Air Force minimum requirements.

摘要:
In brief: The incidence of anemia, based on hemoglobin concentration, is reported to be higher in adolescent boys than in girls. The authors tested 437 adolescents for anemia and found that if Hct alone was used to diagnose anemia, it is present in 2 1/2 times more boys than girls. If Hct and percentage of transferrin saturation were used, 1.6 times as many boys as girls were anemic. More adolescent boys, particularly those in the growth spurt, are anemic than are adolescent girls, but more girls than boys with deficient iron stores are nonanemic. In general, physicians should be less concerned about boys with low Hct and more concerned with adolescent girls with normal Hct.

Today's downhill ski bindings are a huge improvement over the cable bindings of 25 years ago. But researchers aren't satisfied. The role of muscle activity and computerization are two areas under study.
