摘要:
In briefCarotid pulse counting is widely used to monitor exercise intensity. However, some researchers believe it may underestimate postexercise heart rates by initiating the carotid sinus reflex. This study compared carotid, radial, and ECG pulse rates in 20 asymptomatic adults. The authors concluded that carotid pulse counts can be used safely by many healthy adults, but because at least one subject had low heart rate counts after carotid palpations, they present some guidelines: Exercisers should (1) perform the procedure correctly, (2) periodically compare the carotid and radial pulses, and (3) exercise at the lower range of their target heart rate zone.

摘要:
In briefAthletes whose Achilles tendon function is impaired need proper treatment so that they may successfully resume their athletic careers. This review details causes, symptoms, and treatment of a variety of disabling tendocalcaneus conditions, most of which are inflammatory in nature. Recommended treatment usually includes rest, medication, heel lifts, and stretching and strengthening programs. Surgery may also be required.

摘要:
In briefActivities such as pitching, swimming, and serving a tennis ball, which involve overhead movement of the arm, can cause pain around the shoulder. Rotator cuff impingement syndrome is confusing for physicians to diagnose, so the physical examination must be done systematically. Young athletes with the syndrome usually have an insidious onset of soreness in the shoulder that becomes more severe if they continue the offending activity. Treatment revolves around decreasing inflammation, increasing shoulder function, and correcting the cause of the problem. With proper diagnosis and treatment, nonsurgical treatment is successful and allows most patients to return to their previous level of activity.

摘要:
In briefThis author examined the relationship of anthropometric, flexibility, strength, and cardiorespiratory variables to performance in downhill and giant slalom skiing events. Although performance is influenced by many physiological, biomechanical, and environmental components, lower leg strength, anaerobic power, Vo2max, and grip strength were positively correlated with better downhill skiing performance. Grip strength and hip, elbow, and trunk flexion strength were correlated with successful giant slalom performance.

For the sporting traveler, Maui has activities as polished as lawn tennis or as rustic as hiking the Haleakala Crater, not to mention windsurfing, sailing, and golfing on the finest courses in the islands.
