摘要:
The coking characteristics of polyphenyl ether fluids were studied using the AFAPL Static Coker and the Micro Carbon Residue Tester. Test parameters were varied, and the effects of sample size, temperature, time, and test surface material on the amount and type of deposit formed were determined. The effects of oxidative degradation of the fluids and the presence of wear debris and antioxidants were also determined. Several used lubricants were obtained to identify differences in coking tendencies between the new and used polyphenyl ether lubricants. Deposit morphology, melting point, and solubility were determined to provide information about the types of deposit formed.Presented at the 45th Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado May 7–10, 1990

摘要:
Based on a systematic analysis of steel wear surfaces by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Auger Electron Microscopy (AES), a statistical model for friction and wear of steels is proposed. Three categories of contact are proposed; oxide-oxide, metal-metal, and metal-oxide. Each category of contact is related to a probability distribution on the real contact area. Using a new concept of nascently exposed metallic surfaces, this paper derived the mathematical expressions for the friction coefficient and wear rate by means of statistical methods. The calculated values are in good agreement with measured values.Presented as a Society of Trlbologists and Lubrication Engineers paper at the STLE/ASME Tribology Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, October 14–16, 1991

摘要:
A test apparatus was developed to study the transient performance of hydrostatic journal bearings operating in liquid nitrogen. The objective of the test program was to determine the number of revolutions of shaft contact before liftoff and after touchdown as a function of bearing/shaft material combinations and operating conditions. The results show that bearing liftoff occurs quickly in most cases.Presented as a Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers paper at the STLE/ASME Tribology Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, October 14–16, 1991

摘要:
In analyzing the crack problems under the contact loading condition, the pressure distribution on the contact region is usually assumed to be distributed elliptically. However, the existence of the cracks may require some modifications of the well-known Hertz's theory which expresses the relationship between the distribution of the contact pressure, the contact width, the total load of the indentation and the radius of curvature of the indenter. In this paper, a computational method for the cracks in a half-plane under the contact loading condition is developed with consideration to effect of the cracks on the contact pressure distribution. In this method, the continuous dislocations model is employed. From the results of the numerical calculations, it is concluded that when the crack is not small and is located near the contact area, Hertz's theory does not give a sufficiently accurate contact pressure distribution.Presented as a Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers paper at the STLE/ASME Tribology Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, October 14–16, 1991

摘要:
A one-dimensional analysis for lubrication between the piston ring and cylinder wall has been developed. A fully flooded inlet condition and axisymmetric geometry are considered. The piston ring is treated as a reciprocating, dynamically-loaded bearing with combined sliding and squeeze motion. A system of two nonlinear differential equations is used to model the lubrication including the Reynolds cavitation boundary condition. A numerical procedure is then developed to obtain the cyclic variations of film thickness, frictional force, power loss, and oil flow across the ring.

摘要:
Most studies of piston-ring lubrication assume fully flooded lubrication in the cylinder-bore and piston-ring conjunction. However, the lubricant supply is not always adequate for fully flooded lubrication. This study incorporates the effects of lubricant starvation into the one-dimensional piston-ring analysis developed earlier and applies it to a complete ring pack. A system of three nonlinear equations is derived to solve the starved lubrication problem. A postulate for lubricant transport in a complete ring pack is also proposed. A computer code is developed to apply the starved lubrication model to a complete ring pack.

摘要:
The geometry of the four-ball test configuration was examined to develop a method to calculate the wear volume of noncircular scars. It was found that the length of the scar normal to the direction of sliding is related to the relative displacement between the upper and lower balls. The width of the scar parallel to the direction of sliding is dependent upon the curvature of the scar normal to the sliding direction. This curvature is a function of upper ball wear, and it is the upper ball wear that causes noncircularity of the lower ball scars.

摘要:
Modeling of the dynamic performance of a high-speed ball bearing is carried out as a function of the visco-elastic behavior of the lubricant. For a given bearing geometry and a set of operating conditions, the cage motion becomes relatively unstable as the lubricant shear modulus and critical shear stress values are varied to introduce increased elastic effects and lower traction coefficients. A potential for correlation of bearing instabilities to fundamental properties of the lubricant is thereby demonstrated.Presented at the 46th Annual Meeting in Montreal, Quebec, Canada April 29–May 2, 1991
