The histopathology of five temporal bones with transverse fractures shows severe degeneration of the auditory and vestibular labyrinths in four and preservation of the cochlear sense organ in one. The fracture extended through the intratemporal part of the facial canal in two cases suggesting the possible need for exploration of the facial nerve into the internal auditory canal in some cases of facial injury. Fractures through the enchondral layer of the bony labyrinth do not heal by osteogenesis so that the fracture may form a pathway between the middle ear and the meninges. These patients should be alerted about the risk of meningitis in connection with upper respiratory infections and should be advised to live only in areas where expert medical care is available.

A detailed study of 237 patients with acute otitis media is presented. Samples for bacteriological examination were taken from the nose in all cases and from the ear in case of myringotomy or spontaneous rupture. Despite penicillin treatment for 10 days, H. influenzae was reisolated nearly as often asinitially, even from patients with good clinical recovery.

In 170 laryngectomized the radiologic profile pictures of the hypopharynx during deglutition were compared with X-ray pictures during phonation of the vowel ‘a’. Removing or leaving the hyoid bone does neither affect the incidence of recess formation northeir size. In most cases a cicatricial, transversal fold was found. It ran below the recess in the frontal plane and was very much alike an epiglottis. In 20 patients with malignant tumours of the larynx, pharynx, tonsil and paranasal sinuses, a hyperfixation of the mercury isotope was found in the region of the tumour. This is in accordance with the findings of other authors. The examination is not sufficiently accurate to determine the exact extension of a tumour or to find the primary tumour in a patient with a metastatic node in the neck of unknown origin. However, the method can be of value in differentiating between benign and malignant tumours and in diagnosing a recurrence after radiotherapy.

The question whether optokinetic nystagmus in humans can be habituated or not, has never been answered conclusively. In order to investigate this problem more closely, 15 healthy individuals, divided into 3 groups, have been exposed to repeated optokinetic stimulations of different direction and varying intensity. The velocity of the slow phase has been used as a parameter for the evaluation of the optokinetic response. Habituation of optokinetically induced nystagmus is not characterized by a response decline phenomenon, but on the contrary by an increase of the optokinetic response. Retention of this response increment has been confirmed as well as transfer from one side to the other. Repeated optokinetic stimulation has no influence upon the pattern of the caloric, galvanic and vestibulospinal responses of a test subject, i.e. there is no transfer from optic to vestibular responses. The increase of the optokinetic responses, following repeated optic stimulation, is not interpreted as a true habituation phenomenon, i.e. the simplest type of negative learning, but as the resultant of a process of positive learning.
