We have studied the induction of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-specific antigens in nasopharyngeal carcinoma hybrid cells by treatment with the tumor promotor 12–0-tetrade-canoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and n-butyric acid. The pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been studied experimentally by infecting monolayer cells derived from human normal nasopharynx with the B-lymphotropic EBV. Direct EBV infection of the cell sheets derived from the human nasopharynx resulted in the appearance of EBV-associated nuclear antigen-positive floating cells, suggesting that the monolayer cells have been transformed. Since these cells seemed to be of the B-type lymphocyte, it may be assumed that there must have been B lymphocytes among the cells of the monolayer which have undergone transformation by the virus. EBV infection of fused human epithelial cells (Ad-AH and D98-AH cells) and B-lymphoblastoid cells (BJAB cells) showed that the EBV receptors had been maintained for no longer than 24 h even when heterokaryons and hybrid cells were formed.

An unreported case of metachronous coexistence of laryngeal pseudolymphoma and squamous cell carcinoma is described. The long follow-up of the patient (above 11 years), without any evidence of lymphoreticular disease elsewhere, was in favor of a diagnosis of lymphoid hyperplasia of the larynx. The occurrence in the same organ of a squamous cell carcinoma has allowed the thorough investigation of the reactive lesion. The additional cases of laryngeal pseudolymphoma reported in the English literature are reviewed.

The present investigation included 373 children aged 9 months to 7 years, cared for in nine kindergartens and one nursery home. Serial tympanometries were carried out at 2-week intervals. A Madsen Electronics ZS 330 tympanoscope was used for the measurements. To identify A, C1, C2 and B tympanograms, middle ear pressure, compliance and stapedial reflex were measured. After correction for age and other factors which could influence the prevalence of B and C2 tympanograms (number of siblings and parental smoking, which was included in an investigation of the indoor environment of the same children), no significant difference was found in the prevalence of these types of tympanograms, even though the number of children attending the different day-care centers ranged from 19 to 72. No significant difference was found in the prevalence of the A, C1, C2 and B tympanograms between right and left ears, but there was a significant difference in the prevalence of the A tympanograms in boys and girls, but not in C1, C2 and B tympanograms. The maximum prevalence of B tympanograms was found in 1 -year-old children, decreasing to the age of 7 years.

Comparing the auditory brain stem responses to several condensation and rarefaction stimuli, the effect of different stimulus phase shifts is studied. The phase-locking of waves I and III is demonstrated. For waves IV and V it is concluded that they cannot be regarded as a mere repetition of the preceding waves; they can show a distinct behavior as has been suggested earlier on other experimental grounds.
