In order to investigate the best suture method for repair of a facial nerve lesion, three different types of with and without collagen tube End-to-end anastomosis protection were performed in 43 cats. The degree of regeneration was measured according to clinical, electro-physiological and histological methods. The best functional results were achieved by cutting the nerve ends in an oblique fashion and by securing the anastomosis with 9:0 Perlon sutures under magnification afforded by the operating microscope. Wrapping of the anastomotic area has not improved the end result of regeneration of nerve fibers. Therefore, collagen tubes should only be used for splinting nerve stumps when this is necessary and when the advantages which can be obtained by their use will outweigh the disadvantages.

The aim of this study was to detect mis direction of the facial nerve fibers in patients who had had Bell’s palsy with complete clinical recovery. Oscillatory stimulation of test persons with normal vestibular function evokes a certain activity of the helicis major and the temporalis muscles. Patients in whom the vestibulocochlear nerve had been surgically sectioned show no such reactions. The mechanism of the findings is discussed.

The authors observed eight cases of intermittent tinnitus which appeared during the course of recovery from peripheral facial nerve paralysis of various etiology. The tinnitus occurred whenever a certain mimicfacial muscle contracted voluntarily or involuntarily. Under the operating microscope, contraction of the stapedial muscle synchronous with-contraction of the mimic facial muscle was observed. The tinnitus had disappeared completely immediately after the tendon of the stapedial muscle was sectioned. Changes of the minimum audible threshold (air conduction) were measured in each case when the stapedial muscle contracted without sound stimulation, and the results were in accord with the results obtained from the theoretical and experimental works which had been reported by several authors. In a conclusion, the authors stressed the importance of the stapedial muscle tinnitus in the study of pathogenesis of tinnitus, facial nerve paralysis, as well as in the study of middle ear function.

In a 3-year material of patients treated with grommets for chronic secretory otitis media, including 175 ears in 108 children, a follow-up investigation was performed after an average observation time of 29 months. At the follow-up examination the patients were classified according to the position and mobility of the ear drum and the finding at tympanometry. 43% of the patients were found ‘cured’, 35% ‘hardly cured’ and 20 % ‘not cured’. In none of these groups was the hearing, measured by TI, affected. 2 % of the patients had developed chronic suppurative otitis media. There was no significant difference between drainage time in the ‘cured’, ‘hardly cured’ and ‘not cured’ groups, neither of a number of other parameters which were thought to influence the late result. An infant with congenital subglottic atresia is described. After removal of the cartilaginous obstruction the infant was treated successfully by prolonged nasotracheal intubation with specially prepared tubes together with local corticosteroids and hyaluronidase injections around the stenotic area.
