Electron microscopic observations were made of the cochlea in 5–6 month human fetus and 22–30-day rabbit fetus. The hair cells, supporting cells and afferent nerve fibers and endings can be identified among the rows of columnar cells that constitute the organ of Corti in 5–6 month human fetus. Intercellular fluid spaces and efferent nerve endings were not found in the human specimens studied here. The layer of cells next to endolymph in the stria vascularis, the future marginal cells, are separated from the cells beneath by a distinct basement membrane at the early stage of development. Later the basement membrane disappears as the mesodermal cells beneath begin to interdigitate with the marginal cells. A single kinocilium is present on the endolymphatic surface of the cells in the immature cochlea. These findings were correlated with the rabbit fetus cochlea and it is suggested that the last major event that the organ of Corti has, to begin to carry out its auditory function, efferent innervation, would occur in the later stages of human uterine

Phase contrast and electron microscopy was used to study the maturation of the sensory epithelia in the cristae ampullares in the rabbits. The sensory cells differentiate from the simple cylindrical cells at the time their nerve endings make synaptic contact. The afferent nerve endings in the hair cells type II have been first appeared. Then the efferent innervation in the hair cells type II and nerve chalice formation in the hair cells type I have been occurred at birth. The significance of this findings was discussed.

A study of the effect of ethacrynic acid on guinea-pig blood, cerebrospinal fluid and perilymph Na and K is reported. After exposure to 50 mg/kg of ethacrynic acid administered over 48 h, the perilymph K, 1.6 h following the last injection, was found to be markedly elevated above control values (0.01 > P > 0.001). This change in K may result from ethacrynic acid inhibition of a membrane ATPase system. One speculation is that elhacrynic acid ototoxicity results from the inhibition of cochlear-duct membrane ATPase.

To determine the value of different tests of the audiological test battery as screening tests, 227 cases with vertigo are reviewed. The threshold tone decay test combined with the SISI test appears to be the best addition to conventional examination, when the cause of vertigo with sensorineural hearing loss is unknown.

The mechanism of ossicular chain damage due to head injury was studied by photoelasticimetry in a model experiment. The greatest deformations due to head injuries were found in the middle-ear joints, in the long process of the incus, in the neck of the malleus, in the crura, and the footplate of the stapes.

A case of arteriovenous angioma of the concha is reported. Within the space of ten years, a pulsing, fungoid swelling the size of a plum developed. The growth was excised after ligation of the external carotid artery. Histological examination revealed distensibel arterious and venous structures with defective vessel walls and patches of degeneration in the intima and media. Ten months after the operation, the patient is free from symptoms and has had no recurrence.

The size of the free space in the nasopharynx is of interest to many specialists in different branches of medicine. Up to now it has not been possible to measure this space. A new method is described which permits the determination of the size of the nasopharynx in measureable and comparable units. The method which has been worked out and tested from the medical point of view is simple, rapid, sparing, not exacting for the patient or surgeon and only requires the simplest equipment, so that it can be used in routine outpatient work. In the interests of more exact measurement it would be necessary to improve the inflatable sacs technically so that the properties and quality correspond to the requirements given on page 313 of the paper. The author would be grateful to make contact with a suitable technical laboratory which could develop and produce such sacs.

The effect of alphachymotrypsin on the development of postoperative edema following surgery of the maxillary sinus submucous resection of the nasal septum and tonsillectomy has been studied in a series of 103 patients over a period of 2 years. The anti-edematious effect of this enzymatic treatment could be demonstrated in the majority of the cases.
