Success or failure of tympanoplasty depends on the following factors: (1) the anatomic and functional state of the tympanic membrane and the ossicles; (2) type, extension and activity of chronic otitis media at the time of surgery; (3) permanent restoration and drainage of the middle ear, and (4) surgical technique. In the present long-term study 440 cases of tympanoplasty have been followed up for 2–10 years. The anatomic and functional results were evaluated statistically by a computerized data processing procedure. 3 % of a sudden idiopathic deafness may be due to the presence of an acoustic neurinoma. The nystagmus analyser indicates on two output panels at any given time both the cumulative slow-phase displacement and the slow-phase velocity of the nystagmus. Saccades are eliminated from the nystagmus signal, and single slow-phase elements are adapted to each other. For computing the slow-phase velocity, a signal is differentiated, at which the saccades are substituted by elements of the previous slow-phase period. The performance of the nystagmus analyser is shown in different tests: optokinetic nystagmus and afternystagmus, tracking eye movements, rotational and caloric test.

Almost all of the conventional clinical reports on the eye-tracking test are made on the horizontal component of the smooth pursuit function of oculomotor system; few are made on the vertical component. One reason is that during the conventional vertical eye-tracking test the artifacts caused by movement of the upper eyelids often make it difficult to analyze the data. To overcome this problem the authors have developed a method to record simultaneously the horizontal and vertical components of eye movement in the eye-tracking test, and moreover, to reduce artifacts as much as possible. A method of utilizing an ultrasonic nebulizer (De Vilbiss 35 A) in local anesthesia for bronchoscopy is described. 10 ml of 4 % Lidocaine without adrenaline was used as anesthetic agent. Blood levels of Lidocaine were determined on 12 patients. The maximum blood levels were reached 6–8 min after the end of anesthesia. Blood levels ranged from 0.37 to 3.28 µg/ml being so in the nontoxic dosage range. A satisfactory anesthesia was achieved in 95 % of the 1,043 patients subjected to bronchoscopy, while 5 % felt that laryngeal anesthesia was not complete. This was due to inadequate supervision of the breathing. In no case was it necessary to use the conventional way to complete the anesthesia. Observation on 12 cases of occult primary tumor with cervical metastases are reported. Problems in the management of such cases, especially the histopathological diagnosis and the location of the primary tumor, its therapy, prognosis and the reasons of its remaining occult have been reviewed and discussed. The occurrence of delayed occult primary tumor and the secondary-primary gap in such instances have been studied.
