54 epidermoid carcinomas (46 primary tumours and 8 recurrences) and 4 sarcomas of the upper respiratory and digestive tract were classified according to DNA content. 20 primary epidermoid tumours had near-diploid and hyperdiploid modal values, 22 were in the triploid range and only 4, classified as heteroploid cancer, showed DNA values from hypotetraploid onwards without a distinct modal peak. The 4 sarcomas were in the diploid range. DNA content of 25 epidermoid carcinomas, treated by cobalt-betatron irradiation exclusively, was correlated with radiosensitivity. All of 13 near-triploid tumours were radioresistant, while 3 irradiated heteroploid tumours showed good responsiveness. 6 of 9 near-diploid carcinomas were radiosensitive. As diploid tumours were predominantly stage I and II cancer, a competing influence of clinical stage could not be ruled out. In the metastatic recurrence of a heteroploid radiosensitive tumour a resistant diploid-triploid cell population was recorded, and in the local recurrence of a diploid-tetraploid carcinoma the tetraploid cells were completely absent. Thus high ploidy seems to correlate positively with radiosensitivity, especially in the absence of established cell lines.

A case of primary branchiogenic carcinoma in a 55-year-old man is presented. The following criteria for the diagnosis of primary carcinoma arising in a branchial cyst should be fulfilled. Firstly, the anatomy and histology of the cyst should point to a branchiogenic origin and the lymphoid tissue on the cyst wall should be of the tonsillar type. Secondly, no other tumor should be found in the upper respiratory tract or elsewhere. The number of reported cases of primary branchiogenic carcinoma are not great and the diagnosis in many cases denied. Following the criteria above the report of a case, however, seems to serve a useful purpose.

The following question was investigated in experiments on the sciatic nerve of the guinea pig. Does ionizing radiation in doses used for the thorough after-treatment after excision of malignant tumors of the parotid gland seriously endanger regeneration in a reconstructed peripheral nerve – in this case the facial nerve? The clinical experience with a large number of operative reconstructions of the facial nerve in the parotid and masseteric region (Conley; Miehlke) is confirmed. Ionizing irradiation after operation, with focal doses between 4,500 and 6,000 rad in 25 days, leads to a moderate limitation of the speed of regeneration of the nerve but not to serious interference with reneurotization of the mimic muscles. Based upon our clinical observations and the results of repeated control-examinations of 21 patients (head injury, traumatic lesions of the cervical spine, postoperative disorders following surgery of cervical discopathy), the characteristic nystagmus features of this particular vestibular syndrome termed as ‘syncopal vestibular fit syndrome’ may be explained as follows: Four different phases may be distinguished which are regularly observed in all the cases, but showing individual variations of their course of development. The main pathogenetic factor of this syndrome is probably a severe impairment of blood circulation within the vertebral and carotid arteries. Neurological and particularly vestibular findings must be interpreted mainly as the symptoms of an ischemic lesion of the dorsolateral corner of the medulla, whereas pathological alterations of the cervical spine and neuronal factors seem to be of minor importance with respect to the origine of this syndr

The vestibular function in cerebral palsy children is hardly known; the author examined 40 children between 2 and 20 years of age. All the examinations were made by electronystagmography with the pendular armchair of Greiner and partly by the thermic method; in 17 cases the response were normal and symmetrical, in 3 cases peripheric anomalies (unilateral hyporeflexy) could be shown, the other children being characterized by central alterations. These phenomena could let one think that deafness, too, in cerebral palsy children is often of central etiology.

An intralabyrinthine neurilemmoma was found in a temporal bone of an 84-year-old lady. The tumor occupied Rosenthal’s canal and the osseous spiral lamina of the middle cochlear turn. A part of the tumor protruded into the scala tympani from the edge of the osseous spiral lamina.
