摘要:
This article reviews the origins of scientific management and traces the history which has led to the concepts and attitudes required in managing for quality today. Leading figures in the history of technology are quoted as the quality theme is developed from its 17th century origins to the present day.A practical, simple technique is described to help engineers powerfully contribute to the quality revolution and the continuous improvement of all organisational processes.

摘要:
The organisation of an engineering function in a large electricity utility was reviewed and five alternatives identified. A detailed analysis by a staff team of assessors reversed the initial preconceptions of the staff that the structure should be based on geographical and functional consideration. By studying and discussing the factors the team were self-motivated to accept changes that put the specific needs of clients first. The methodology has widespread application to bringing about acceptance of change, and the re-identification of objectives.

摘要:
Quality is primarily viewed in terms of corporate culture, multi-departmentalad hocforces and the salvation of entire companies. This article, instead, will view these ideas as they might be applied by a team leader with a small permanent staff.

摘要:
The highly competitive market calls for new production strategies and the introduction of advanced information techniques in the factory environment. This has a significant impact on the internal organisation of the factory and its relation to the outside world. New production techniques like ‘just-in-time’ ask for changes in the qualification and organisation of the involved people. This article presents the advantages and problems based on a case study where a knowledge-based system was introduced to optimise the information flow between the production management department and the shopfloor.

摘要:
With the advent of the Single European Market and rapidly increasing international competition there has never been a more pressing time in the history of British manufacturing industry for managers to sharpen their skills. Glenis Moore recently visited the GEC Management College, Dunchurch, to see how one of Britain's leading engineering companies tackles the task of initially educating and then reskilling their own and other companies' engineering managers.

摘要:
This article draws attention to the demise of British manufacturing and stresses the importance of design. It makes clear that unless there is a change in attitude to the role of the professional engineer Britain's manufacturing base will continue to decline with markets steadily being lost to countries with a better motivated workforce. Parts 1 and 2 were published in the December 1991 and February 1992 issues of the Journal.
