This article, by the Chairman of British Telecom, is based on the 7th Lord Nelson of Stafford Lecture. In it the author examines the challenges faced by a major high-tech company operating against international competition.

In many areas, the technology of the future has often been applied to the problems of today with disappointing results. This article attempts to outline a more balanced approach to CIM, a balance between technology, organisation and the most important asset any company possesses, its people (i.e. the human-centred approach). This approach is still in its infancy, but is steadily gaining ground by proving its industrial worth.
