SUMMARYThis paper reports on a 17‐year‐old patient whose family included several members showing convulsive symptoms. The case involved the early occurrence of epilepsy, manifestly correlated with a slow‐growing tumour (astrocytoma) in the right temporal region. The respective bearing on this epilepsy of an organic process and of the constitution is discussed with special reference to the therapeutic implications.RÉSUMEaLes auteurs rapportent l'observation d'un malade de 17 ans appartenant a une famille dont plusieurs sujets presentent des manifestations comitiales. SUMMARYThis paper reports on three children in the same family, who were suffering from général ized epilepsy (absences and/or général ized tonic‐clonic seizures). One of these children in addition showed progressive lipodystrophy (Barraquer‐Simons disease).On the basis of these observations, theories of pathogenesis are presented which take into account the probably diencephalic origin of the lipodystrophy and the epileptic manifestations.RÉSUMÉLes auteurs rapportent les observations de trois enfants de la même famille atteints d'epilepsie général isee commune (absences et/ou crises tonico‐cloniques type grand mal). SUMMARYThe author criticizes the commonly made error of extrapolating findings obtained in a small number of patients to all such patients. This is how the little understood problem of the heredity of certain rare forms of epilepsy casts a shadow of suspicion on epileptic patients in général. The same applies to studies of the epileptic character, which for years have indiscriminately reflected on the reputation of all epileptic patients, whereas only 5 % of them were affected by it.Two principles should guide the scientific approach to the problem of heredity; the first is recognition of the very real diversity of various diseases which come under the heading of epilepsy; the second is that a hereditary transmission factor must be considered only when the affected members of a family show the same type of epilepsy.On the basis of statistical data concerning 2690 patients, the author identifies the rather rare cases in which there is reason to discourage procreation.RÉSUMÉL'auteur s'érige contre l'erreur trop communement faite d'extrapoler sans distinction aucune les résultats obtenus sur un petit nombre de malades a la masse entiere de ceux‐ci. C'est pourquoi le probleme mal compris de l'heredite de certaines formes rares de I'epilepsie pourrait faire un tort immense aux epileptiques en général. II en a ete de meme des travaux sur le caractere epileptique qui pendant des annees a ainsi entache sans distinction la reputation des epileptiques alors que ceux qui en etaient atteints n'etant qu'au nombre d'environ 5%.Deux principes doivent determiner l'approche faite par l'homme de science vis‐avis du probleme de l'heredite: le premier concerne l'existence d'une diversite reelle parmi les epilepsies; le second requiert de ne tenir compte d'un facteur hereditaire dans la transmission que lorsque le type d'epilepsie est identique chez les membres d'une famille.Analysant les dossiers statistiques portant sur 2690 patients, l'auteur precise les cas, fort rares d'ailleurs pour lesquels il y a lieu de decourager la
