摘要:
Nutrition educators have been vocal in their criticism of the food and nutrition messages in children's programming and associated advertising. At the same time, they have been reluctant to test their impact on food behavior or to capitalize on the potential of television as an educational tool. The authors provide a comprehensive review of our knowledge on the topic and challenge educators to expand our knowledge base through relevant research.

摘要:
Connie M. Weaver, Ph.D., is professor and Head of the Department of Foods and Nutrition at Purdue University. Much of Dr. Weaver's research has focused on the metabolism of minerals, particularly calcium and iron.Recent reports implicating excess storage iron as a risk factor in coronary heart disease have prompted a reevaluation of the physiological role of iron. When the consequences of both iron depletion and iron overload are considered, it becomes apparent that recommendations to the general public regarding iron status need to be based on results of sound scientific investigations and not only on conjecture and hypotheses.

摘要:
Typical American and English breakfasts have been criticized recently because they are considered high in fat and calories in contrast to a “lighter” Mediterranean breakfast pattern that is perceived to be lower in both and therefore more healthful. The present article, the first in a series examining breakfast from a historical-nutritional perspective, focuses on the development and evolution of Anglo-Saxon breakfast traditions. The second considers the historical roots of the American breakfast and its expression in 1995, while the third compares and contrasts American and Mediterranean breakfast traditions, with special focus on Italian breakfast patterns within the context of healthful meal planning.

摘要:
The growing numbers of Hispanics in the United States have motivated federal agencies to document the ethnic diversity of their food patterns and nutrient intakes as a basis for developing culturally appropriate interventions, counseling strategies, and educational materials. The authors delineate the main characteristics of eating patterns of the three main groups of Hispanics assessed by the National Center for Health Statistics.

摘要:
In October 1994, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, PL. 103–417, became law. Passage of the law followed 5 years of considerable debate over the regulation of consumer information and safety controls on dietary supplements (including vitamin, mineral, ammo acids, herbs, and similar products). Surrounding passage of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 (NLEA, PL. 101–535), a number of events have occurred in both the legislative and regulatory arenas that have had some bearing on supplements. The major events that have occurred at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and in Congress are reviewed chronologically in this article, which is the first of two reports on the passage and provisions of the final legislation.
