SummaryA detailed account is given of the experience from the use of hibernation in the bronchoscopic examination of infants and children, aged from 0 to 6 years. After analysing the favourable features of the pharmacological effect of hibernation in some detail, the potential complications are dealt with. An appraisal of advantages as opposed to disadvantages induces the authors to claim that in children under the age of 6 years–when they, too, used to employ no anaesthesia–it is advantageous to perform bronchoscopic procedures under hibernation.Application de I hibernation artijicielle dans les examens bronchoscopiques chez les nour‐risons et les enfants.Les auteurs rapportent les résultats de leurs observations concernant Femploi de ľhibernation artificielle dans des examens bronchoscopiques effectués chez des nour‐rissons et des enfants âgés de O à 6 ans. SummaryElectrophoretic analysis has shown the relative concentration of albumin and gamma‐globulin of the CSF to be lower than that of serum and the relative concentration of the beta‐globulin to be higher in the CSF. A fraction migrating somewhat faster than albumin is demonstrable on electrophoresis of the CSF, but usually not on such fractionation of serum. SummaryThe survival of Cr51‐labelled placental red cells of 10 full‐term and 6 premature infants was studied after transfusion to adult recpients. The mean apparent half‐life of the red cells from full‐term infants was found to be 22.8 days, and that of red cells from premature infants 15.8 days (cf. 27.5 days for red cells from adults). Results obtained by others using the differential agglutination method have indicated a longer life span than that corresponding to the Cr51half‐times above mentioned. The most probable explanation of this difference seems to be that Cr51is eluted more rapidly from fetal red cells than from red cells of adults. SummaryA certain production of CSF occurs at the site of the choroid plexus. This CSF differs in composition from a pure plasma dia‐lysate and is thus probably formed by a secretory or other active process from the epithelium of the plexus. At the same time, however, certain substances, especially water, are in rapid exchange with the extracellular tissue of the brain and spinal cord.Reabsorption of the CSF occurs partly via arachnoidal villi and Pacchionian bodies to the cranial venous sinuses, partly via intrathecal capillaries and veins and finally to some extent by way of lymphatics via the perineural spaces.The protein in the CSF probably consists of serum protein, that has entered the CSF space. Protein is normally not formed within the central nervous system but may be under certain pathologic conditions. Normally, the serum protein enters the CSF space in two ways: pardy via meningeal vessels above all of finely dispersed proteins especially albumin, and partly via the choroid plexus either by passage via intercellular leaks in the plexus epithelium or also through secretion or some other active process. The CSF formed by the choroid plexus is relatively poor in protein and has an electrophoretic pattern, that differs more from that of serum protein than does CSF fluid from other parts of the CSF space.The reabsorption of the CSF protein occurs mainly directly to the blood stream, either via arachnoidal villi to the cranial venous sinuses or via intrathecal capillaries and veins. SummaryThe absorption of radioactively labelled iron added to milk given to children less than 3 months old was investigated. The percentage of absorption of the tracer was found to be considerably larger than that observed at a later age. A comparison with figures for net retention of iron from milk in children of similar age indicates that excretion of iron takes place in these infants, or that true absorption of iron is not measured by the tracer method. Some difficulties in the interpretation of the conventional tracer absorption test are indicated. The phenomenon of “mucosal block” for iron is present also in the present age group.
