摘要:
Transactions has not merely changed its appearance; with this issue it assumes a revitalized role in the AGU family of publications. The new name on the cover is symbolic of this role: Eos, the Greek goddess of the dawn, represents for us the new light continually being shed by basic geophysical research on the understanding of our planet and its environment in space. E⊕S will be used to draw scientists in the diverse specialties of geophysics together so that they may address themselves, with ever broadening perspective, not only to questions arising from their laboratory or field research but also to questions raised by the influence of their work on programs affecting the lives of people. Articles that reflect responsible concern for the political, economic, and legal implications of scientific research are actively solicited, as are articles that keep us up to date by reviewing exciting developments in geophysic

摘要:
A regular companion appears now in a new format:AGU Transactions. It is our oldest publication. At one time it had only the purpose of recording faithfully the proceedings at AGU's annual meetings. It has long since outgrown this historical role. As a quarterly it served to print abstracts of papers to be presented at meetings. It also acquired a broad spectrum of miscellaneous departments: General articles, book reviews, bibliographies, reports on business meetings of the sections and the council, and news about members. All these are important for the internal life of a scientific society. But it had become clear for some time that quarterly issues too rarely offered an opportunity of communicating with the membership in order to be effective.

摘要:
The application of photogrammetry to three‐dimensional geodesy is a highly specialized area of photogrammetric measurements. All measuring systems for this purpose are concerned with three‐dimensional triangulation of selected points; they differ not so much in principle as in data acquisition techniques and ultimate purposes. In Europe the photogrammetric method is accepted as one of the tools of the geodetic discipline. Its application, however, has largely been limited to problems conventionally associated with the technology of mapping and, to an even lesser extent, of surveying. It is, therefore, quite another matter to consider the application of photogrammetry to tasks that are presently and unquestionably in the domain of classic geodetic triangulat

摘要:
The discovery of a multi‐million dollar deposit of manganese on the floor of Green Bay, Lake Michigan, was announced by Professor J. Robert Moore, a University of Wisconsin oceanographer. Pellets composed of manganese (2–17%), iron, and other elements were found in July by Professor Moore and a crew of graduate students during routine bottom sampling. Moore estimates that there are between 180 and 200 square miles in which concentrations of the deposit are sufficiently high to make mining practical, when techniques are perfected to guard against further pollution and ecological imbalance in the bay. It is also significant that the manganese is in pellet form, which makes the cost of recovery and processing economically feasi

摘要:
USGS scientists are currently measuring differences in the force of gravity throughout the mountains of California and Alaska to provide basic research data, aid in the exploration of natural resources, and to locate hidden faults beneath populated areas. Previous gravimetric data helped to outline and define the extent of sedimentary basins with oil‐bearing deposits such as Cook Inlet near Anchorage. Measurements taken at a maximum spacing of five miles throughout California and fifteen miles throughout Alaska should be completed by 197

摘要:
The annual rings from cross sections of selected tree stems provide a means of dating and reconstructing events of the past. The number of rings, together with anatomical features in the ring structure, have been used widely to estimate the minimum date of such occurrences as recent glacial advances or retreats, lake level fluctuations, landslides, floods, fires, and many other types of natural or man‐made changes. Also, the precise cross dating of ‘drought‐sensitive,’ tree‐ring chronologies has been used to establish the cutting date of archaeological timbers, periods of stream downcutting, and occurrences of fires. Rates of slope degradation have been estimated, and radiocarbon dating is being refined and calibrated by dates obtained from analyses of tree rings. There are many additional app

摘要:
Late in 1966 the U.S. Geological Survey opened a new Nuclear Center in Denver designed to provide laboratories and equipment for the application of nuclear techniques to hydrological and geological problems. The Center is now nearing final development with the installation of a TRIGA‐type research reactor. The reactor will be operational early in 196

摘要:
Discussions regarding both necessary and desirable changes in statutes and by‐laws started in 1966, and final agreement by members of the executive committee was reached at the 14th Annual Meeting in 1967. The proposed changes were put to a vote of the regional membership in early 1968 and were approved overwhelmingly. The major changes were: (1) Change in period of elections in order to conform to the change at National Headquarters. (2) Change in number of members of the executive committee to permit at least one representative for each section and more than one for the larger sections. (3) Recommended changes in statutes and by‐laws can now be made by an affirmative vote of the executive committee and be submitted to the Council of the AGU for appro
