摘要:
Exciting new images of the Moon taken by the Jupiter‐bound Galileo spacecraft December 8 and 9 promise to expand understanding of lunar geology. Galileo viewed the Moon from a new perspective, showing for the first time, through spectral techniques, the mineralogical composition of the lunar crust on the far side. The Galileo flyby also revealed the largest impact basin ever seen on the Moon. The mosaic at left was constructed from images that Galileo's Solid‐State Imaging system obtained from a range of 567,000 km after the spacecraft had completed a flyby of Earth en route to Jupiter. The images were taken through violet and near‐infrared filters and overlain digitally on an airbrushed map of the Moon to show how the colors relate to geographic fea

摘要:
The exchange of ideas concerning the magnetopause and its boundary layers was the primary purpose of the informal workshop, “Plasma Physics of the Earth's Magnetopause and its Boundary Layers,” held at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, N. Mex., October 2–4. The workshop was supported by LANL Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, and attendance was restricted to about 35 people in order to maintain a small, informal character for the workshop. Although no global consensus emerged at the workshop, discussions were lively and conclusions were reached in several areas. Some of these conclusions concerning where past research has brought us and where future research is likely to lead us are described

摘要:
A new AGU award has been established to recognize the “unsung” people who through their roles as facilitators and coordinators contribute to the advancement of scientific research. The award is named for the late Edward A. Flinn III in honor of his exemplary service to the worldwide geophysics community. The first Flinn Award will be presented at the 1991 Spring Meeting banquet in Baltimore. Nominations of candidates should be sent by February 1 to Sean Solomon, Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA 02
