摘要:
The growing importance of the geophysical sciences, and the outstanding success of the International Geophysical Year, have increased the need for suitable means of quick publication of scientific papers in geophysics. It has become increasingly obvious that our bi‐monthlyTransactionscould no longer meet these demands as a prime publication outlet for our science. Accordingly, almost two years ago, wheels were set in motion to provide a medium that would reach the widest appropriate audience, and thus improve the opportunity of geophysicists for prompt publication of their work.During the same period it developed that Merle A. Tuve, Editor of theJournal of Geophysical Research, indicated that he felt that the joining of theJournal of Geophysical Researchand the scientific content of theTransactionswould better serve the scientific communit

摘要:
Last summer I attended the fifth meeting of the Comité Spéciale de l'Année Géophysique Internationale (CSAGI) in Moscow as one of the Canadian delegates. En route to the meetings I traveled through New York, Brussels, Helsinki, and Leningrad. From Moscow I flew to the Caucasus Mountains and to the oil fields in Tataria between the Volga River and the Urals. I returned to Canada through Peking, Sian, Lanchow, Canton, Hong Kong, Taipeh, Maioli, and Tokyo. I found that the governments of all the countries which I visited were generous in giving me opportunities to see the geophysical work being done under their jurisdiction. I was invited to go to some places such as Tataria and Peking, but it was I who proposed other visits such as those to Sian, Lanchow, and the Cauca

摘要:
Many of those attending the XIX International Geological Congress in 1952 had the good fortune to meet, for the first time, the spirited geological team of Termier and Termier, as they were then at the University in Algiers. For me there was also the unforgettable experience of finding myself seated next to Henri Termier at an improvised banquet table in Tamanrasset and listening to him tell of their work and their working schedule. At that time, the first volume (L'histoire géologique de la biosphére) of their four‐volume treatise of geology had just been published and was on exhibit at the Congress. This, the second volume, appeared in 1

摘要:
The Navy's newest and largest oceanographic vessel, theGibbs, was placed in operation by the Navy in December 1958. It will serve as the principal research vessel of Hudson Laboratories of Columbia University under contract with the Office of Naval Research. It is the altered seaplane tenderSan Carlos, has a displacement of 2800 tons, is 310 feet long, and is capable of a maximum speed of 18 knots. It will have a crew of 48 and provide facilities for 28 scientists, and will be used especially to study the physics of the ocean itself and of sound in the ocean. TheGibbsis the second oceanographic research vessel placed in operation late in 1958, the first being theChainwhich is on contract with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. TheChainis 210 feet long, has a displacement of 1800 tons, and is capable of a maximum speed of 14 knots.

摘要:
The Pacific Northwest Region held its annual meeting in Portland, Oregon, November 13–14, 1958, with a total registration of 80 but with about 150 persons attending one or more of the sessions. About 15 papers were presented on various subjects with the theme of the IGY receiving particular emphasis. The highlight of the meeting was an address on the subject “Scientific Exploration of Space” by William H. Pickering, Director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of California Institute of Technology. A financial report indicated that the assets of the region were $115.34 on July 1, 1958, and after the receipts and disbursements relating to the meeting in November, the balance was $133.34. Details for this report were transmitted by Wilbur D. Simons, Chairman of the Pacific Northwest Regional
