摘要:
Most of us can remember when it first became evident that we were producing, and in turn being deluged by, the present flood of increased scientific information. For a time it was popular to speak of the information explosion. The flood of paper has now been with us long enough to make comments about the information explosion more trite than funny. We then spoke seriously of the problems of information retrieval, when it was realized that finding existing information might be as difficult as producing new knowledge. No doubt in some instances it was more feasible to discover something again than to exhaust all avenues of search for assurance that answers did not already exist. These are problems of scientific communication, which is one of the most frustrating and burdensome of our unsolved problems. Many good minds and many dollars have been applied in search for solutions. Perhaps the problem has been solved tolerably in some fields, but most of us feel that we are about to go under for the third time.

All sessions, meetings, dinners, and social events are held in the Sheraton‐Park Hotel. The floor plan on the facing page, though somewhat idealized, can be used to locate meeting places. Exhibit Hall 1 is directly below Sheraton Hall. Exhibit Hall 2 is adjacent to it, beneath the Concourse of States.Section sessions are arranged in alphabetical order according to the code symbols listed below: G, Geodesy P, Planetary Sciences GA, Geomagnetism and Aeronomy S, Seismology H, Hydrology T, Tectonophysics M, Meteorology V, Volcanology, Geochemistry, and O, Oceanography Petrolog

摘要:
On November 12, 1966, more than 450 scientists and technicians from throughout the United States conducted research projects on what may be the most intensively studied solar eclipse in the 4000 years of recorded history of such events.Scientists, many of them working on cooperative investigations with researchers from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Italy, and Peru, studied many aspects of the eclipse in 87 U. S. research projects. A total of about 150 projects were conducted by scientists of 14 countries. Studies included land, sea, and airborne probes of the Sun and its effects on the Earth's atmosphere, using airplanes, balloons, ships, and rockets as platforms for highly sophisticated instrumentation photography.

摘要:
Geophysics is a major research interest in the physics departments of several African universities. The reasons for this are discussed. Recent work on the Rift Valley in eastern Africa and on the equatorial ionosphere is outlined. It is shown that studies in geophysics have enabled universities in countries with newly developing economies to make serious contributions to the world store of scientific knowledge. They have promoted a strong liaison with scientists in more developed nations on the basis of a welcome interdependence. Applied geophysics is essential for economic development. In the last few years digital computers have provided a powerful new tool for the analysis of geophysical observations. In addition, space satellites have made it possible to collect large quantities of data in a short time over all parts of the Earth. Thus there has been a double revolution in geophysics: a revolution due to both the increased rate of data collection and the increased rate of data analysis. It is argued that this demands a new strategy for geophysics research, for local experiments need to be planned and interpreted in the context of larger research programs. There is a serious danger that geophysics in Africa will be reduced to a routine collection of data for interpretation elsewhere. The progress of geophysics in Africa, as a discipline worthy of university research, as a subject attractive to alert minds, and as a study of practical importance, depends on geophysicists in Africa being able to plan experiments and to interpret the results. Methods of assisting this progress are considered, including visits by experts, conferences, and the establishment of an International Center for Tropical Geophysics. It is argued that the establishment of an international center would be the most effective way to stimulate continuing geophysical research in developing countries, and that this should serve ail tropical countries, not those in Africa alone.

摘要:
This handbook was written by over 60 scientists of the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratory. It is intended to serve a broad spectrum of users: “the planner, designer, developer and operator of aerospace systems, scientists and science‐minded people who seek summary of space‐age environmental research.” It supersedes the Handbook of Geophysics (also written by AFCRL scientists and published in 1961) and contains much similar material that has now been considerably amplified. This new handbook contains 22 chapters geodesy and gravity; model atmospheres; atmospheric temperature, density, pressure, and moisture; winds; precipitation, clouds, and terosols; atmospheric composition; atmospheric optics; atmospheric electricity; some aspects of electromagnetic wave propagation; transmission and detection of infrared radiation; the geomagnetic field; ionospheric physics; airglow and aurorae; meteoritic phenomena the Sun; solar electromagnetic radiation; corpuscular radiation; interplanetary space and the solar atmosphere; the lunar environment; planetary environments; astrophysics and astronomy and radio astronomy. Some parts of geophysics, such as nuclear geology, oceanography, and seismology are not i

摘要:
The Fifth Meteorological Congress will meet from April 3 to 28, 1967, for the purpose of submitting a world plan and implementation program of the World Weather Watch. Items to be discussed will be promotion of meteorological research and training; hydrometeorology and the International Hydrological Decade; organization of the scientific and technical work of the World Meteorological Organization; Antarctic meteorology; review of the work of the eight technical commissions; consideration of amendments to the convention and general regulations of WMO; WMO's participation in technical cooperation activities: technical assistance; special fund; and other aid programs. Also considered will be a study of various administrative questions and the public information program. Elections for President, Vice Presidents, and members of the Executive Committee will be held.

摘要:
The fourth award of the Vetlesen Prize for outstanding accomplishments in sciences of the Earth and the Universe was made October 18, 1966, at Columbia University to Jan Hendrik Oort, Director of the Observatory and Professor of Astronomy of the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. This Prize, which was established in Columbia University by the G. Unger Vetlesen Foundation in 1959, is an outstanding award, comparable to the Nobel Prizes in other sciences, carrying not only the distinction and the honor but a cash prize of $25,000 and a gold medal.

摘要:
A Symposium on Mean Sea Level has been organized by the International Association of Physical Oceanography, with the support of Unesco and the co‐sponsorship of the American Geophysical Union. The symposium is scheduled to be held April 13–15, 1967, at the Lecture Hall of the National Academy of Sciences, 2101 Constitution Ave., N. W. Washington, D. C. Limited funds are available to assist scientists residing outside the United States in meeting a portion of their travel expenses. Letters of application should be addressed to Mr. Steacy D. Hicks, Coast and Geodetic Survey, U. S. Environmental Science Services Administration, 6001 Executive Blvd., Rockville, Man‐land 20852. The Coast and Geodetic Survey is serving as the
