摘要:
This winter, most of the citizens of the United States will experience some degree of inconvenience due to shortage of energy—mainly hydrocarbons. The extent of the annoyance will depend on the weather, foreign supplies, effectiveness of governmental regulations, and self‐discipline of the public. If the weather is mild and foreign supplies become available soon, the immediate emergency will not be so acute. However, in any event, we have passed an important turning point in human history. We can no longer contemplate continued exponential growth in the use of petroleum hydrocarbons. To the public, this is shocking. Indeed, even such large corporations as the major automobile manufacturers have been caught napp

摘要:
A Lunar Petrology Conference, sponsored by the Lunar Science Institute under NASA contract NSR‐09‐051‐001 and attended by nearly 100 scientists, was held from July 24 to 26, 1973, in Houston, Texas. The principal aim of the conference was to bring together penologists and geochemists active in lunar research to discuss the present status of lunar petrology. The emphasis was placed on discussion with a minimum of formal presentations. In each session two or three keynote speakers reviewed present knowledge and highlighted problem areas in order to encourage discussion. The 3‐day meeting was characterized by lively, broad‐ranging, often humorous discussion of a variety of problems. The following is a short synopsis of the major areas of d

摘要:
For the fourth time since 1964, seismologists and other geophysicists from Japan and the United States met to discuss in detail the past progress, current status, and future outlook of the programs of research on earthquake prediction and control in each of the two nations. The seminar, held in Boulder, Colorado, August 13–15, was an activity within the U.S.‐Japan Cooperative Science Program and was jointly sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the NSF. Eleven Japanese delegates and observers, representing 8 different research institutes and agencies, joined 28 American participants from 17 universities and government agencies for the seminar. The program consisted of 42 formal presentations and two discussion sessions. In this report we give a summary of the proceedings of the seminar. The abstracts of the papers presented are available on microfiche from the American Geophysical Un

摘要:
The First Annual Meeting of the European Geophysical Society was held on September 25–28, 1973, at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland. The total registration was 482, of which 59 were students under 26 years of age.The idea of holding annual meetings for geophysicists in Europe could be traced to a proposal at a geophysical meeting in Madrid some 4 years ago. Keith Runcorn made the first step when he helped organize the First European Earth and Planetary Physics Colloquium at Reading in the spring of 1971. At a general assembly of that colloquium the question of the future was discussed. Although the participants unanimously wished for a periodical gathering of European geophysicists, considerable difference of opinion existed concerning the ways and means of implementing the concept. Idealists argued against an organized society and hoped that future EEPP colloquiums could be organized on an ad hoc basis by volunteers from various countries. However, the majority voted in favor of the proposal to establish a dues‐assessing European Geophysical Soci

摘要:
A team of U.S. scientists has succeeded in measuring variations in the 235,000‐mile distance to the moon with an accuracy of about 6 inches. In the next year or so, they hope to narrow this accuracy to about 1 inch.‘Our purpose is to provide better data on the relative motions of the earth and moon,’ says James Faller, Chairman of the Lunar Ranging Experiment (LURE). ‘This information then can be used to study continental drift, to measure the wanderings of the earth's poles, to learn more about the complex phenomena inside the earth, and to determine the mass distribution in the interior of th

摘要:
A recent report from the National Research Council, part of a series issued annually, summarized the academic careers of the 33,000 recipients of 1972 research doctorates from United States universities. One category included in the summary is degrees in earth sciences, interpreted as including geophysics, oceanography, and meteorology, as well as more traditional areas. Some comparative figures for earth sciences doctorates in 1972, versus all doctorates and versus 1967 earth sciences doctorates, are tabulated below. (Since these statistics are based on field of doctorate rather than on field of subsequent employment, many who may now be members of AGU and working in geophysics are not included in the earth sciences category but rather are considered under physics and astronomy, chemistry, or environmental sciences.)

摘要:
Researchers with the U.S. Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are using Hawaii's island of Oahu to obtain unique measurements of large‐scale water motions in the central North Pacific Ocean area.Three pairs of electrodes are planted in 105‐foot‐deep holes drilled down to the salt water, which underlies the island's fresh‐water table, on the grounds of NOAA–s Honolulu Observatory site at Ewa Beach. These buried sensors sense the electromagnetic fields produced by electrically conducting sea water moving in the earth's magnetic field. Scientists can translate these sensations into measurements of such large, relatively slow motions as tides, planetary waves, some types of turbulence, and

摘要:
Scientists from five European countries, England, Canada, and the United States have organized a Summer Advanced Institute on Physics and Chemistry of Atmospheres to be held July 29–August, 9, 1974, at the University of Liège, Belgium. The institute is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, the Defense Nuclear Agency, and Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory. The purpose of the institute is to present and adequately discuss experimental and theoretical results of current research and to help educate graduate and postdoctoral students and new researchers in the physical and chemical phenomena of atmospheres. The two‐week institute will offer about 40 one‐hour lecture periods, with adequate time for discussions, in which attention will be focused on multidisciplinary research bearing on important problems of the future and the identification of significant areas of agreement and disagreement. Courses will include structure and composition of the atmosphere, experimental measurements in the atmosphere and interpretation, physical processes, laboratory measurements of relevant rate coefficients, and atmospheres of other p
