摘要:
Sites in eight states have been selected by a panel from the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) as finalists in the selection process for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Superconducting Super Collider (SSC), two Republican Senators announced today. DOE acknowledged that it had received a list from NAS but would not confirm the contents of the list.According to the Associated Press, Senators Jesse Helms (R‐N.C.) and Phil Gramm (R‐Tex.) were notified about the list by Secretary of Energy John Herrington. In a subsequent news conference, Helms announced that sites in Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Tennessee, New York, Illinois, Michigan, and North Carolina had been placed by the NAS panel on a “short list” and presented

摘要:
The present‐day formation of marine phosphorite nodules has been documented in only three areas, off Peru‐Chile, Namibia, and eastern Australia. The Peru‐Chilean and Namibian areas are both zones of coastal upwelling with associated high biological productivity, and the nodules form within rapidly accumulating anoxic, organic‐rich (much greater than 1.0 wt%) diatomaceous oozes [Baturin et al., 1972;Burnett and Veeh, 1977]. The principal component of the nodules, carbonate fluorapatite, apparently precipitates because abundant PO43−is released from the bacterial degradation of organic matter. This model is supported by pore water profiles, which show PO43−release in the upper few centimeters of the sediments, followed by strong PO43−and F−uptake at depth, the result of apatit

摘要:
Marine sedimentary rocks now exposed on land are mainly deposits of shallow shelf seas, although ancient deep‐sea sediments do occur in the mountains. Thanks largely to the 15‐year effort by the Deep Sea Drilling Project of the Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI) Deep Earth Sampling Program, we have made quantum jumps in our understanding of the history of the ocean. Time has been added as the fourth dimension to oceanography, giving birth to a new interdisciplinary science, paleoceanography. The International Lithosphere Program is a successor to the International Geodynamics Program of the 1970s. The program is coordinated by the Inter‐Union Commission on Lithosphere (ICL), a commission of the International Council of Scientific Unions. This volume,Mesozoic and Cenozoic Oceans, is an interim report of Working Group 7 of the International Lithosphere Pr

摘要:
This is the third edition of an important reference work—or at least that is the official count. In reality, for those of us who remember the original 1957 edition and the 1960 “revision,” this is the fourth. Aside from quibbling, however, it is useful to recall the origins of this work. Additionally, it is nostalgic for me, since in those days I was beginning my education as a geologist, and the presence of the “Glossary” was a source of comfort and amusement at the

摘要:
Record lows were set for streamflow in the Pacific northwest and in the southwestern Appalachians in October 1987. The Spokane River at Spokane, Wash., the Columbia River at The Dalles, Oreg., and the Yellowstone River at Corwin Springs, Mont., were among the rivers breaking low‐flow records that had stood for nearly 100 years. Fifty‐year lows were reported for the Tombigbee River near Coatopa, Ala., and the Green River at Munfordville, Ky.The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the combined flow of the Mississippi, St. Lawrence, and Columbia Rivers was 14% below median at 551,400 cubic feet per second (cfs). Mean October elevations of the Great Lakes (provisional National Ocean Service data) was lower in October than it was in September and was lower than it had been in October 1986. The Great Salt Lake fell 0.15 ft (0.04 m) during October, reaching 4209.25 ft (1282.97 m) above National Geodetic Vertical Da
