摘要:
AbstractTen‐to 13‐year‐old children were examined annually for three years to determine the caries activity in the proximal and occlusal surfaces of first permanent molars. Almost every tooth with an unsound (carious or filled) proximal surface also had an unsound occlusal surface. Caries scores in proximal surfaces remained relatively constant and low. The percentage of teeth with occlusal caries or fillings increased throughout the study, even though the teeth had been erupted for seven to ten years by the end of the study. Within the age range studied, the time that teeth were in the mouth had little effect on the vulnerability of occlusal surfaces to caries a

摘要:
AbstractIncidence rates for new root caries and new coronal caries in noninstitutionalized older adults are unknown. In this study, a representative sample of 451 elderly lowans received dental examinations at the start of the study and again after 18 months. This dentate cohort had a mean of 0.87 new surfaces of coronal decay per person per year and a mean of 0.57 new surfaces of root decay per person per year. Coronal caries occurred at an annual rate of 1.4 surfaces per 100 susceptible coronal surfaces. Root caries occurred at an annual rate of 2.6 surfaces per 100 susceptible root surfaces. This study shows that both coronal and root caries were active in this older population, indicating a need for emphasis on the prevention and treatment of dental caries in older adults.

摘要:
AbstractWhile mail surveys offer a low‐cost method for collecting health data, they have been unpopular because of concerns about low response rates and nonresponse bias. This paper examines the response to a mail survey concerning oral and facial pain and uses regression techniques to assess the degree and direction of nonresponse bias on estimated prevalence rates. The analysis shows that early and late responders to the survey differed in terms of sociodemographic variables and responses to items concerning pain. The regression analysis suggests that the rather high prevalence rates revealed by the survey are not a product of bias induced by nonresponse and deserve further investigatio

摘要:
AbstractThe slowness in the adoption of sealant use has been caused by many interrelated professional, scientific, social, and economic factors. To study these factors, data were collected by the use of mail questionnaires sent to a representative sample of 3,504 private practice general dentists. The average percent of patients 18 years of age and younger receiving sealants was 18.7. Nearly one‐third of the respondents indicated that none of their patients received sealants. Data describing the following factors were obtained: demographic background, sealant awareness, attitudes and knowledge about sealants, and decision‐making factors. We concluded that professional organizations should take a more active role in promoting sealants to dentists, professional organizations and governmental agencies should increase efforts to inform patients/consumers of the benefits of sealants, guidelines for sealant use should be developed, state boards should permit the delegation of sealants to trained auxiliaries, and sealant manufacturers should make more effort to advertise and promote seala

摘要:
AbstractIn 1986, 201 local dental programs received a dental survey requesting information on their programmatic activities. Survey categories included general agency information, dental coordinator characteristics, program budget, staffing and salaries, clinical services, health education and other programs, and miscellaneous questions. A total of 156 programs returned the survey, for a 77.6 percent response rate. This article provides descriptive data on various selected activities within local dental health organizations. Highlights include: (1) 12 agencies have terminated their dental program since 1982; (2) 88 percent of existing dental programs have a clinical component; and (3) the budgets of viable programs have increased over the past three years. These data will assist local health agencies and national organizations in program planning and serve as a resource for program directors, as well as those who are developing new programs.

摘要:
AbstractForty‐six of 103 dentists responded to a survey of their preferences for fish or chicken in preparation for the 1986 Dinner Meeting of the American Board of Dental Public Health in Miami, Florida. Approximately three‐fourths of the respondents (74%) requested fish (F). Analysis of preferences with regard to geographic location indicated that almost half of the respondents requesting fish were from Region IV (Southeast), while preferences according to year of certification indicated that more than three‐quarters of the respondents (77%) who had been certified since 1970 preferred fish. There were no significant differences between the two groups in mode of transportation, time since last visit, and number of denture we
