AbstractThe development of the Preschool Behaviour Checklist, for screening emotional and behavioural problems in preschool children in group settings, is described. Inter‐rater reliability and internal consistency was established, and its validity was shown using a variety of methods. These include observations of the children, interviews with staff, comparison between clinic and nonclinic populations, factor and cluster analysis and comparison with another screening questionnaire. AbstractA sample of 453 Australian children was followed over the first three years of schooling. Behaviour problems were assessed at the beginning of the first year at school and at the end of the second and third years. At the end of the third year the children were classified as specific reading retarded, general reading backward or normal. At school entry backward readers were found to have behaviour problems, principally relating to attentional deficit. It was concluded that this factor may play a causative role in their reading difficulty. Retarded readers, on the other hand, showed no evidence of behaviour problems.

AbstractA sample of 453 Australian children was followed over the first three years of schooling. A broad range of cognitive skills was assessed at the beginning of the first year at school and at the end of the third year the children were classified as retarded, backward or normal readers. At school entry, backward readers were found to be deficient in a broad range of cognitive skills, as might be expected given their lower IQs. Retarded readers, however, were found to be deficient on a more limited range of tasks, mainly involving early literacy and phonological processing skills. The implications of these findings for theories of cognitive deficit in reading retardation are discussed.

AbstractFour cases are described of prepubertal boys in whom the convergence of neurodevelopmental disorder, viral infection and psychosis seemed more than coincidental. AbstractFifty‐three boys with aggressive conduct disorder were followed up 2 years after their original examination. Twenty‐four (45%) no longer had the disorder and were classified as improved. AbstractThis is a population‐based survey from Göteborg, Sweden, of all youngsters treated as in‐patients for operationally defined ‘psychotic disorders’ during their teens. It was shown that 0.54% of all teenagers in Göteborg had been treated for such disorders at least once during the 13‐to 19‐year‐old age period. Boys and girls were about equally affected, but schizophreniform disorders tended to be much more common among the boys and affective disorders more common among the girls. Child psychiatric services had been consulted much less frequently than adult ones, in spite of the many developmental aspects of the psychotic disorders. Scores for reduced optimality in the pre‐and perinatal periods were marginally, though significantly, more common in the psychosis groups than in an age‐, sex‐and maternity clinic

AbstractNine children with conduct and nine with anxiety disorder participated in the study. The subjects were requested to respond to verbal tasks (counting, picture description, story telling). Disturbance of conduct was associated with short initial hesitation before speaking. It is suggested that the initial hesitation variables are measures of reflection and cognitive planning. Anxiety across subjects was associated with increased breath rate and lower output of speech per breath. It is suggested speech breath variables are reliable measures of anxiety. Implication for the diagnosis and management of child psychiatric disorders are discussed.
