摘要:
SUMMARYThe reactions of first‐born children to the birth of a sibling, as reported by their mothers, were studied in 40 families. Increased clinging, withdrawal and tearfulness were negatively related to positive interest in the baby, but other aspects of disturbed behaviour were not significantly associated with each other, or with positive interest. Differences in temperament, in the quality of the mother‐first‐born relationship, in age and in the mothers' State in thepost partumweeks were found to be associated with differences in the reaction of the first‐born c

摘要:
SUMMARYMaterial gathered in 1961 as pail of a large scale Sample survey of the behaviour of school age children has been used to select a group of boys whose behaviour deviated most from that typical of other boys of their age. Their subsequent convictions for indictable (major) offences have been ascertained over a fifteen year period together with those for a matched control group originally exhibiting “normal” behaviour. Findings show those in the deviator group to be significantly more likely both to become offenders and to become recidivists. Qualitatively, parental reports of anti‐ social behaviour.(stealing, lying, destructiveness and wandering from home) were shown to carry the worst prognosis for subsequent conviction(s) particularly where teachers' reports supported those of the parents. The practical and theoretical implications of the study are disc

摘要:
SUMMARYData were collected on 175 admissions to a child psychiatry clinic, primarily through interviews with mothers, Forty‐nine per cent of the children were diagnosed as hyperactive and 46 per cent as unsocialized aggressive; 34 per cert had both disorders. Comparisons were made between the children who were hyperactive only, unsocialized aggressive only, hyperactive and unsocialized aggressive, and those with other diagnoses, on behavioral Males which were derived from the interview data but were relatively independent of the diagnostic criteria. On the scales of antisocial behaviour, egocentricity and reactivity, hyperactive and unsocialized aggressive children resembled those who were only unsocialized aggressive more than those who were only hyperactive. These results support earlier critisms of a broadly defined syndrome of hyperactivity. However, evidence was also found for a more specific hyperactive syndrome such as that proposed by Sandberg, Rutter and Taylor (1978

摘要:
SUMMARYThe goal of the present study was to consider two previously unexplored issues, concerning the usefulness of parental ratings of temperament: (1) the extent in which parents project their own personality into their ratings of the temperament of their children, and (2) the extent to which mothers and fathers agree in their ratings of the temperament of their children. In a sample of 137 Families, mothers and fathers rated themselves and their spouse on an adult version of the EASI Temperament Survey and both of them rated two of their 2‐to 6 year‐old twin children on the children's version of the EASI Temperament Survey. No evidence was found to support the hypothesis that parents project their own personality into their ratings of others. In terms of the second issue, parental agreement, the data were less clear‐cut. The average parental agreement for the 11 scales of the EASI Temperament Survey was O.51, corrected for unreliab

摘要:
SUMMARYA self‐paced vigilance task adapted from operant work was employed to study visual attention in hyperactive and normal children. The task distinguishes between two components of vigilance, observing responses and signal detention responses which are further divided into hits and false alarms. All subjects is were exposed to the same number of signal presentations under a low (VI 53) density and a high (VI 15) density schedule. Hyperactive children emitted a lower percentage of hits and a greater percentage of false alarms than normals. Hyperactive children showed observing response rater than normals. The educational implications of these findings are considere

摘要:
SUMMARYThe study describes on‐going family interaction patterns in 15 epileptic‐ member and 15 control families with a view to isolating differences which may be responsible for behaviour disorders in epileptic children. Categorisation of the speeches of family tetrads in a problem‐solving situation revealed that epileptic ‐member families tended towards an autocractic matriarchal structure which is more efficient in problem‐solving. The epileptic child was found to withdraw from family interaction. That form of organisation would appear to equip the family with a more secure structure to meet the family crisis while simultaneously meeting the dependency needs of the “sick” child. However, the relationship between this type of functioning and disturbed behaviour leads to speculation as to the long‐term effects of such co
