摘要:
Research now shows that schizophrenia is a disease of the brain as well as the mind and, as such, must be treated in ways other than by drugs alone. Psychopharmacology is helpful in controlling the positive symptoms, but does not eliminate aspects of the disease such as apathy and withdrawal. Studies show the structure and blood flow of the schizophrenic brain is very different from the normal brain. Families of schizophrenic individuals are forming support groups to share their feelings of suddenly being cast in the role of caregivers. Additionally, the schizophrenic individual needs to be placed in a comfortable social and vocational setting to increase the chance of improvement.

摘要:
Children with schizophrenia turn away from the outside world at an early age because they cannot decode the rhythmic patterns in their parents’voices. These children are unable to separate themselves from their parents as they grow up, and as a result, are unable to develop a sense of self. The schizophrenic child develops complementary behavior to counierbalance the parent's attitudes—that is, if a father acts in a dominant fashion 90% of the time, the child will be submissive in 90% of his/her interpersonal relationships. By working with separation techniques, the nurse therapist can help the client develop a more normalized self

摘要:
While a potentially volatile subject, discussion of sex between a nurse and schizophrenic client is a key to improving the patient's overall condition. Despite fears early in the century that schizophrenia caused a breakdown of moral inhibitions, it is now believed that most schizophrenic individuals are very similar, in sexual contexts, to “normal” people. Research shows that schizophrenic men and women are still interested in sexual relations but do not know how to bring their feelings into the open. They also may be resisting neuroleptic drugs because the medication causes varying sexual dysfunction. In order to help these clients, nurses first must examine their own feelings toward clients’sexual behavior. The nurse needs to work with clients on developing social and communication skills as well as on informing them about safe methods of sexual co

摘要:
Death from auto‐erotic asphyxiation is a startling phenomenon that is on the rise both in the general population and within psychiatric facilities. While these auto‐erotic behaviors may lead to death, it is seldom the client's intention to do harm; rather, the intent is to heighten masturbatory sensations. After describing this phenomenon, the authors discuss implications for nursing c

摘要:
The trend toward normalizing life in mental health institutions poses a challenge to the facility's staff in the area of sexual relations among clients. In addition to their other duties, nurses now are being asked to discuss sexual feelings with the clients as well as teach sex education, AIDS information, and safer‐sex practices. Such programs need to begin with retraining of staff and institution‐wide classes to determine the clients’knowledge base. One model program experienced initial resistance among staff and patients, but worked well after an adjustment period. Different methods were used successfully on the female admission unit, the addiction unit, and the rehabilitation and release

摘要:
This article describes the process of sexual counseling with a developmentally disabled couple, illustrating principles and techniques that were unique to this couple's concern. The author asserts that this aspect of a marital relationship should not be denied a couple simply because they are handicapped. Her intent is to help nurses understand some of the issues involved in sexual counseling with developmentally disabled persons, and to motivate nurses to help those who may express concerns.
