ABSTRACTSThe internal structures of the vocal tract are difficult to measure without impinging upon their normal movement patterns. Imaging techniques overcome that difficulty because they measure internal movement indirectly, without direct contact with the structures. This paper examines four well‐known imaging techniques: X‐ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound. Tongue and vocal tract researchers have employed all of these techniques. Imaging systems provide very different articulatory information from flesh point tracking systems. They provide information about the shape and position of the entire imaged structure, rather than a single point on the structure. In addition, images usually can be made in multiple planes, providing midsagittal, parasagittal, coronal, transverse and oblique sections of the structure. However, these systems have several limitations. CT and MRI create static images only. Ultrasound cannot image hard tissue. Radiation exposure limits the duration of X‐ray imaging. This paper discusses the advantages and limitations of imaging systems, as well as the uniqueness of the measurements made with them.Il est difficile de faire des mesures des structures internes du conduit vocal sans en altérer les mouvements. Les techniques d'imagerie surmontent cette difficulté en mesurant les mouvements internes indirectement, sans contact avec les tissus. Cet article examine quatre techniques bien connues d'imagerie médicale: la tomographie (CT), la résonnance magnétique nudéaire (RMN), les rayons X et les ultrasons. Elles ont toutes été utilisés dans des recherches sur le conduit vocal ou la langue. Elles offrent des informations sur l'articulation très différentes de celles obtenues avec des systèmes de suivi d'un point marqué sur les tissus car elles fournissent des données sur la forme et la position de la structure complète. De plus, ces images peuvent être obtenues dans différents plans, offrant ainsi des sections frontales, sagittales, transversales, longitudinales. Cependant ces systèmes ont plusieurs limites. La RMN et la tomographie ne peuvent donner que des images statiques. Les ultrasons permettent la visualisation des tissus mous uniquement. Les rayons X imposent une limitation de la durée d'exposition. Cet article discute des avantages et des limites de ces systèmes d'imagerie, ainsi que de la spécificité des mesures obtenues.Die inneren Strukturen des Stimmrohres kann man nur mit Schwierigkeit messen, ohne die normalen Bewegungsparameter zu stören. Abbildungstechniken lösen dieses Problem, well sie die innere Bewegung indirekt messen, ohne die Strukturen direkt zu berühren. In diesem Artikel werden vier bekannte Abbildungstechniken besprochen: Röntgenaufnahmen; Computertomografie (CT); Magnetischer Resonanzimaging (MRI); und Ultraschall. Bei Forschungen der Zunge und des Stimmrohres hat man all diese Methoden benutzt. Abbildungstechniken weisen ganz andere artikulatorische Daten auf, als Methoden, die sich auf Folgen von einzelnen Stellen der Hautoberfläche verlassen. Sie ergeben Daten über die Form und die Stellung des ganzen abgebildeten Strukturs, im Gegensatz zu einer einzelnen Stelle des Strukturs. Zusätzlich kann man normalerweise gleichzeitig in mehreren Ebenen Aufnahmen machen, und dadurch Schnittbilder der mittleren‐ undparasagittalen, koronalen, queren und schrägen Ebenen des Strukturs darstellen. Diese Methoden leiden aber an mehreren Einschränkungen. Bei CT und MRI bekommt man nur statische Abbildungen. Mit Ultraschall kann man hartes Gewebe nicht beobachten. ABSTRACTSThis study investigates patterns of vocal fold movement in normal speakers. With the use of new computer software, laryngograph (Lx) waveforms from 100 normal speakers were examined. Specifically, four phases of the Lx waveform were observed and measured. These were then compared on both an interpersonal and intrapersonal basis. The results indicated that four phases were clearly identifiable in almost all subjects and that measurements of the closure and closed phases showed a high degree of consistency. The opening and open phases were more variable. In addition the onset and offset patterns of phonation were observed. Clear patterns were identified, consistent between speakers. The results are discussed with reference to the degree of consistency that can be expected in the vocal fold movement of normal speakers.Cette étude analyse le mouvement des cordes vocales chez les locuteurs normaux. En utilisant un nouveau logiciel, les enregistrements des courbes laryngographiques (Lx) de 100 sujets normaux ont été examinés. Chaque période du signal est décomposée en quatre phases qui sont ensuite étudiées et mesurées avec précision. Des comparaisons interpersonnelles et intrapersonnelles ont été effectuées. Les résultats montrent que les quatre phases sont clairement identifiables chez presque tous les sujets. Les mesures sur la phase de fermeture et la phase fermée ont montrées une bonne consistance, alors que la phase d'ouverture et la phase ouverte se sont montrées moins régulières. Par ailleurs, les débuts et fins de phonation ont été étudiés. Des régularités interlocuteurs ont été mises à jour. Les résultats sont discutés en se référant au niveau de consistance qui peut être attendu dans les mouvements des cordes vocales chez les locuteurs normaux.In dieser Studie werden die Stimmlippenbewegungen normaler Sprecher untersucht. Mit Hilfe von neuen Softwareprogrammen untersuchten wir die laryngografischen Wellenformen (Lx) von 100 gesunden Sprechern. Es wurden vier Phasen der Lx‐welle beobachtet und gemessen. Sowohl intra‐ als auch interindividuelle Vergleiche wurden gemacht. Die Ergebnisse zeigten vier bei fast alien Versuchspersonen deutlich erkennbare Phasen. Die Daten für die Verschlußphase und die verschloßene Phase zeigten einen hohen Niveau der Übereinstimmung. Bei der Eröffnungsphase und in der offenen Phase war eine größere Variabilitöt zu sehen. Dazu haben wir Phonationsanfangs‐ und Verschlußzeiten beobachtet. Wir stellten deutliche Tendenzen fest, die zwischen verschiedenen Sprechern konsistent waren. ABSTRACTSThe technique of electropalatography (EPG) records the location and timing of tongue contacts with the hard palate during continuous speech. Recent developments in hardware and software design of the Reading electropalatograph are described and applications of the technique in assessment and remediation of a variety of speech disorders are outlined. In assessment, it is shown that EPG can provide insights into possible origins of auditorily perceived errors, and case descriptions illustrate how this information can lead to a more rationalised approach to treatment. In therapy, the provision of real‐time visual feedback of tongue movement can be effective in the remediation of certain types of intractable speech problems. Finally, the importance of techniques such as EPG in the objective evaluation of treatment procedures is discussed in the light of the increasing demand for accountability within the speech therapy service.La technique de l'electropalatographie (EPG) permet d'enregistrer la position du lieu de contact entre la langue et le palais pendant la parole. Le développement récent en hardware et software de l'EPG est décrit dans cet article et des applications de cette technique pour l'évaluation et la rééducation de différents troubles de la parole sont présentées. Pour l'évaluation, il est montré que l'EPG peut aider à trouver des explications aux erreurs perçues à l'oreille, et la description de cas illustre comment ces données peuvent mener à une approche du traitement plus rationnelle. En thérapie, la présentation en temps réel d'un retour visuel du mouvement de la langue peut être efficace pour certains types de troubles de la parole intraitables. Finalement, l'importance des techniques telles que l'EPG dans l'évaluation objective des procédures de traitement est discutée à la lumière de l'exigence croissante pour plus de rationnalité dans les services d'orthophonie.Die Elektropalatografie (EPG) ermöglicht die Aufnahme der Stelle und die Zeitabmessung der Zungenkontakte mit dem Gaumen beim laufenden Sprechen. Wir beschreiben neuere Entwicklungen im Hard‐ und Software der Readinger‐EPG; die Anwendung bei der Bewertung und Behandlung verschiedener Sprechstörungen wird im Umriß dargestellt. Wir zeigen, daß die EPG bei der Bewertung eine Einsicht in den möglichen Ursprung eines auditiv wahrgenommenen Fehlers ermöglicht, und durch Fallbeschreibungen wird illustriert, wie diese Daten zu einer rationalisierten Behandlung führen. Wir beschreiben, wie das Vorhandensein eines realtime, visuellen Feedbacks der Zungenbewegungen bei der Therapie bestimmter, unlenksamer Sprechstörungen wirkungsvoll sein kann. ABSTRACTSThe acoustic phonetic analysis of neurogenically disordered speech permits considerable insights into the detailed nature and possible origin of such disorders. Representative results obtained with a concise speech protocol, comprising spontaneous speech, diadochokinesis, phoneme distinction, rhythm and intonation, are illustrated. Disorders at the supralaryngeal, laryngeal and durational levels are distinguished. This non‐invasive technique reveals aspects of speech disorders that are difficult or impossible to perceive auditorily. This research is part of a general computer‐based diagnostic approach presently under development in our laboratory.L'analyse phonétique acoustique de la parole affectée par des perturbations neurologiques permet une compréhension de la nature et des origines de telles perturbations. Nous illustrons des observations caractéristiques, obtenues au moyen d'un protocole concis comportant la parole spontanée, la diadochocinésie, la distinction phonémique, le rythme et l'intonation. Les perturbations sont distinguées selon leur affectation aux niveaux du conduit vocal supralaryngé et laryngé et de l'organisation temporelle. La présente technique non‐invasive révèle des aspects des perturbations qui sont difficiles ou impossibles à percevoir auditivement. ABSTRACTSThe electrolaryngograph (ELG), first conceived in the 1970s, has been used extensively as a tool in both research and clinical practice. Recent software developments have extended its clinical utility for both quantitative assessment of voice production and as an interactive visual display for remediation and teaching. In this paper, we discuss applications of the electrolaryngograph, highlighting general principles of computer‐based assessment and remediation.L'electrolaryngographe (ELG), conçu dans les années 70, a largement été utilisé, aussi bien pour la recherche que dans la pratique clinique. Des nouveaux développements informatiques permettent maintenant une utilisation clinique aussi bien pour l'évaluation quantitative de la voix, que comme un dispositif d'affichage interactif pour la rééducation et l'enseignement. ABSTRACTSIt has recently been suggested that combined electroglottography and photoglottography may aid diagnosis and assessment of treatment of laryngeal pathology. The ability to record and analyse such traces was previously restricted to voice research laboratories. A simple, less expensive, system for use in the outpatient clinic is described. A preliminary study on 10 normal subjects produced results comparable to that of voice research laboratories. The clinical potential is discussed. This may represent a valued addition to the armamentarium of the clinician.Il a récemment été suggéré que la combinaison de l'electroglottographie et de la photoglottographie puisse assister au diagnostique et à l'évaluation des traitements des pathologies du larynx. La possibilité d'enregistrer et d'analyser ces tracés ‘taient jusqu’ présent réservée aux laboratoires de recherche sur la voix. Dans cet article, un système simple, moins cher, destiné à l'utilisation dans les services de consultation, est décrit. Une étude préliminaire sur dix sujets normaux a fourni des résultats comparables à ceux des laboratoires de recherche. Wir beschreiben ein einfaches, nicht so teures System zum Gebrauch in der ambulanten Klinik. ABSTRACTSThis paper proposes the use of a set of symbols related to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and diacritics for the description and notation of articulatory behaviours which can be perceived visually, but which have no effect on the perceived auditory quality of phonemes produced. It is suggested that the use of such symbols will clarify clinical analysis of speech patterns. Examples of clinical usage are given.Cet article propose l'utilisation d'un ensemble de symboles en rapport avec l'Alphabet Phonétique International (IPA) et de symboles diacritiques pour la description et l'annotation des comportements articulatoires qui peuvent être perçus visuellement mais qui n'ont pas d'effet sur la qualité auditive perçue des phonèmes prononcés. Il nous semble que l'utilisation de ces symboles permettra des analyses cliniques plus claires.
