SummaryThree children with XXYY chromosome anomalies whose initial presenting symptom in speech therapy clinic was lack of a phonological system, are studied developmentally, psychologically and socially. Speech and language development are looked at in detail. Similarities and differences in their psycholinguistic abilities are discussed. Speech therapy methods are described. It is concluded that the laying down of kinaesthetic patterns is essential for the development of a phonological system in such children.

SummaryThe paper presents a short review of the ideas and aims of previous linguistic studies of articulation disorders. The traditional, now unsatisfactory, definition of “dyslalia” is critically evaluated, and an approach is made to a “typology” of severe articulation disorders. Several analytical techniques are suggested and exemplified, which demonstrate in a simple form the linguistic nature of the disorder, from both the phonetic and phonological points of view, and which provide guidelines in planning remediation. The implications of such disorders for a psycholinguistic model are discussed in the light of the child's apparent ability to comprehend normal spoken

SummaryThree groups of carefully selected children, twelve with severe receptive aphasia, twelve with profound hearing loss and twelve unimpaired controls were given the task of discriminating between simple rhythmic sequences. The results of the aphasic children were very poor whereas the deaf and the control children did not differ significantly. The disability of the aphasics was found to transcend the auditory modality. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

SummaryFor some time it has been known that “complex” sound stimuli are more effective than pure tones in eliciting behavioural and other responses from infants aged 0–6 months. We have recently studied this issue in some detail, and confirm that stimulus complexity defined in terms of frequency bandwidth is of major importance in eliciting behavioural responses from infants aged 1 week, 6 weeks and 6 months. We have also found that the human voice is effective for 6 month old infants but apparently not for babies aged 1 and 6 weeks. SummaryA group of 40 bilingual or polygot adult aphasics in Haifa, Israel, were tested and retested after three months speech therapy conducted in Hebrew. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of therapy given in Hebrew on the patient's home language. The Wepman and Jones Language Modality Test of Aphasia (L.M.T.A.) was adapted and translated into Hebrew. A home language questionnaire was also devised in order to compare results before and after therapy both in Hebrew and in the patient's home language. The correlation coefficient between the results on the L.M.T.A. and the patient's home language were significantly high. The results suggest that therapy in Hebrew had a positive effect on the patient's skill in communication in his home language.

SummaryThis study investigated a structured approach teaching three basic sentence types (b.s.t.) to adult aphasics. The three types: verb form, to be; verb, transitive; and verb,intransitiveare used in applied linguistics and transformational grammar material in teaching English as a second language to foreign adults. Aphasics were selected for the study on the basis of good verbal output and auditory input scores measured by the PICA. Subjects were given a pre‐ and post‐test measuring verbal syntactic performance for the three b.s.t.'s. They participated in a one month therapy program which presented these sentence types. All improved in the post‐test in verbal production of each b.s.t., as well as pattern carryover, and subject/verb agreement. This type of therapy approach is offered as a possible future part of a programmed language rehabilitation program similar to that which Holland (1970) has sugg
