摘要:
ABSTRACTA follow‐up study of 22 patients with audible symptoms of adductor spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is reported. The analysis included acoustic and electroglottographic recording of continuous speech and of sustained phonation. Using this method different patterns were described from the different possible associations of four features: voice stoppage, laryngealisation, tremor, breathy phonation. The evolution of the SD clinical and physical symptoms is reported in relation to the patterns observed at the onset of the study. The complete recovery of three patients was physically attested to over a lapse of several months. These patients exhibited an identical pattern with isolated voice stoppages and laryngealisation and were the youngest subjects of the sample. A completely similar pattern was observed only in one of the 19 other patients who did not improve. The aetiology of SD is discussed from the information obtained in the stud

摘要:
ABSTRACTNinety‐nine bilingual children with Panjabi as a mother‐tongue and English as a second language were assessed, in three age/term groups between six and a half and eight and a half years, on oral expressive language tests of their syntax development in Panjabi and in English. The two major findings were, firstly, that in English second language development seems to follow, broadly speaking, first language acquisition patterns and, secondly, that there are almost no data to support the idea of language transfer as far as mixing of Panjabi syntax into English is concerned, while there appears to be intrusion of English into Panjabi in specific structu

摘要:
ABSTRACTTwelve stutterers and twelve non‐stutterers each read out loud following three types of rehearsal: overt rehearsal of the material, silent rehearsal, or inappropriate overt rehearsal (counting backwards). Silent rehearsal impaired performance (fluency) compared to the other conditions. Heart rate measures (HR) and electro‐myography (EMG) did not differentiate stutterers from non‐stutterers, except that EMG immediately before speech was significantly elevated after silent rehearsal for stutterers. The data suggest that silent rehearsal may be accompanied by excessively high muscle tone, and impair rather than facilitate fl

摘要:
ABSTRACTData were collected on the use of the Monterey Fluency Program by 102 British trained clinicians over a five‐year period with 107 clients who stuttered. Analysis of the data revealed that the clinicians had responded well to the training and used the programme efficiently and effectively. The 107 stutterers improved from 11.3 to .2 per cent stuttering after an average 7.2 hours of therapy. Additional information about programme operation and the types of stutterers in Great Britain was generate

摘要:
ABSTRACTDiscussion of the problems involved in assessing the effects of therapies offered to aphasic patients appears to have become a dispute about methodology. Since it is important that therapists devote more effort to experimentally evaluating therapy, uncertainty about the appropriate methodology is unlikely to be helpful. The choice of methodology in this instance reflects the current state of knowledge about aphasia therapy and the nature of the questions we wish to answer. Since therapists will wish to discover effective therapies further large scale studies of the general impact of therapy are unlikely to be informative.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThree patients in a neurosurgical unit following road traffic accident are described. Patient A was aphonic post‐traumatically. Voice returned suddenly and spontaneously three months post trauma. Patient B, with a severe closed head injury, presented with localised oedema of the vocal cords and laryngeal stridor caused by removing his own endotracheal tube thirteen days post trauma, resulting in aphonia. Voice returned gradually over the next sixteen days. Patient C sustained a spinal injury in addition to a severe closed head injury. He was also aphonic post trauma. The initial stage of this was thought to be traumatic mutism. A residual lower motor neurone dysarthrophonia remained, however. Various explanations for the aphonia are explored; in particular for Patient A the possibility is discussed of frontal lobe‐limbic involvement, nerve damage at both upper and lower motor neurone levels and right hemisphere involvement. Diagnoses of aphonia following head injury and therapeutic procedures are discus
