SummaryThe work described is concerned with the study of vocal fold vibration before, during and after treatment in twenty patients suffering from a variety of medically diagnosed disorders. Voice quality was assessed with the help of both standard qualitative laryngologists' and speech therapists' judgements and patients' opinions, and of the output waveform of the laryngograph.Previous work (Abberton and Fourcin, 1972;Fourcin and Abberton, 1971;Fourcin, 1974) suggested that these waveforms (Lx) might show characteristic features of certain vocal fold disorders. The present study is an attempt at providing further information in this direction.

SummaryAn investigation was conducted to find a method for teaching language skills to children in a Unit for those with language disorders. At the beginning of a school year children from two Units were assessed for intelligence and language ability on two verbal and two performance subtests of W.I.S.C., the P.P.V.T., the R.D.L.S., and the I.T.P.A. During the year a programme developed from I.T.P.A. was administered to children in one Unit only and at the end of the year all the children were reassessed. The children who had been taught by the language programme showed significant improvement on the verbal scale of W.I.S.C., R.D.L.S., and all but two subtests of I.T.P.A., while the other children showed either no significant improvement or a deterioration on all the tests. It is suggested that a method of teaching language skills based on the model of I.T.P.A. is suitable for use with children in a Language Unit.

SummaryA survey of 26 patients who have had modified Orticochea pharyngoplasty to alleviate problems of velopharyngeal incompetence has been made.Tape recordings at pre‐operative stage and at three months and 12 months postoperatively were assessed by a group of speech therapists who were not involved in the management of these patients. SummaryThis paper presents a therapeutic approach based on psycholinguistic theory as a method for initiating two word utterances in children's spontaneous language. The method of treatment has been used experimentally for several years as an individual treatment program in a clinical setting. The subjects were three and four year old children who used only single word utterances. The responses of these subjects to this approach indicated that this theory and therapy was a useful method to enable these children with language problems to proceed in the developmental sequence of language acquisition.

SummaryThis paper seeks to show that perseveratingimmediateecholalia (echophrasia) in children suffering from early infantile psychoses, especially Autism, is a deviant form of noted normal language development and that the key to its progressive eradication in therapy is in the condition itself SEEN AS A NECESSARY STAGE OF LANGUAGE ACQUISITION. Case notes and observations support the ideas put forward. It is not claimed that deeper seated disorders in Autism are in any way solved by this therapy but that it effectively allows them to be reached by other therapies and techniques that rely on language.
