摘要:
This paper analyzes correlates of status in the legal profession, arguing that the study ofintraoccupational status attainment not only is important in its own right but can also illuminate the processes ofinteroccupational status attainment. Data on a national sample of lawyers indicate that while entry into the profession is strongly correlated with characteristics of family of origin, within the profession these characteristics do not have substantial direct or indirect effects on attainment. Longitudinal comparisons indicate that these relationships have been fairly constant over the past fifteen years, and cross-city comparisons reveal unsystematic variation among cities in the correlates of status attainment. The concluding section of the paper considers the implications of these findings for the legal profession and for the study of status attainment at the interoccupational level.

摘要:
Program failure is essential for many organizations in that effective solution of the problems they address would eliminate the purpose of their existence. Although skid row rescue missions fail on a colossal scale in converting derelicts, they constitute an archetypical example of a general process of providing employment for staff members in a post-industrial society. Institutionalizing survival on perpetual failure occurs through the availability of outside financial support and favorable presentation of the program to a sponsoring group as the best available means of achieving a socially desirable end. A basic question in social policy involves giving continued support to organizations which benefit directly from their failure.

摘要:
This research examines two questions drawn from the literature on organizations. Do lower level personnel desire greater participation in decision-making, as it is sometimes assumed; and is there a direct relationship between participation and commitment to the organization? Members of three temporary organizations whose goals were to achieve innovations in education through the full participation in decisions of all subunits were questioned. Although there was a desire for more power among subordinates, there were sharp differences in preferences between members of the two subunits lowest in the hierarchy. No relationship was found between position and commitment to the organization. The implications for the participation thesis as applied to organizations are discussed.

摘要:
This paper integrates recent approaches to the study of social movements and of litigation by examining the use of the courts during times of social unrest. Litigation is one of several strategies available to social movements and their adversaries in the struggle for political power. After suggesting the potential and limits of social movement litigation, the paper examines political trials as one form of litigation, locating their origins in attempts to affect the distribution of resources important for the success of protest group efforts. Emphasis is placed on the jury and the press as two distinctive features of American democracy that affect decisions by social movement members to use the courts and also shape subsequent proceedings and outcomes. Finally, the paper discusses several lines of inquiry for future research.

摘要:
We very much regret that the cover and table of contents of the December issue (Volume 58, Number 2, 1979) carried the wrong title for the paper by Peter D. Killworth and H. Russell Bernard. It should have been printed as: “A Pseudomodel of the Small World Problem.”
