A new development in Soviet strain gauge technology, not yet generally known in this country, seems important enough to warrant reprinting, in full and exceptionally as a technical article, some Soviet commercial literature on the subject. It is hoped that a critical technical appraisal and some further news of this development may be published in “Strain” in the near future. The illustrations have been reproduced from the literature received from the U.S.S.R.; they are therefore not as clear as illustrations reproduced from original photographs, but they indicate sufficiently the possibilities opened up by this Russian development. A method of measuring strains very close to weld deposits has been developed using moiré fringe technique and mismatch gratings. It is necessary to compromise between accuracy and gauge length, but an accuracy of 100μin/in (‐10‐4) can be achieved with a gauge length of 0.2 in (5mm). The paper describes a method of multiplying the basic frequency of a deformed grating by filtering in the Fourier plane of a lens. The moiré pattern is formed in the image plane of this lens by mechanical interference of a frequency‐multiplied enlarged image of the specimen grating with a reference grating.
