Several analytical methods are outlined to deal with the title problem when the vessel is free of external constraints. In essence these correspond to the Haigh equation, which provides a nonlinear relationship between the induced circumferential stress and the applied internal pressure. To make use of these analyses a survey of the cross sectional profile is required. The approach using an internal swinging arm has been found most useful. The extent to which an improved Haigh equation is valid is examined with reference to the pneumatic loading of a twin saddle supported horizontal vessel which contains imperfections and restraints at the supports.

Photoelastic stress analysis can be a long and tedious process. However recent and current developments in the field of automated and computer aided photoelastic analysis mean that it is becoming possible to do more complex analysis and to perform it more quickly. This paper provides a survey of these developments and the advances in polariscope design.

A method of determining the unmodified temperature, T1, for elimination of thermal strain from the load testing is presented. It is based on the fact that the intersection point of two T–ε lines for a test point shows zero stress (or strain) and coincides with the known zero stress at the neutral axis of the structure, if the test point is set at the axis. The abscissa of this intersection point indicates the unmodified temperature T1. The method has been applied to the load test on a suspect beam in a 4‐storey building. The conclusion was reached that although the suspect beam was weaker than normal, it could take the assigned load without any remedial measures. The photograph shows one of a batch of 'sandwich' load cells made up to answer a common problem; a relatively large diameter column passes through a fixed structure with a remote control tool at the end of the column. It was required to measure and control the load exerted between the column and the surrounding fixed structure.
