Data from the daily analysis of environmental samples using x‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy are presented, covering a period of seven months in 1974. Simultaneous data from two sites, one on the main A38 highway in southwest Birmingham, England and the other (control) 350m. north at the Department of Physics of the University of Birmingham are analysed in detail and correlations between elemental concentrations at the two sites and between different elements at each side identified.

The concentration of radon in tap water supplies varied from 47 nCi/1 to 370 nCi/1. Indoor air concentrations varied from <0.5 pCi/1 to 19.1 pCi/1 and 0.001 WL to 0.025 WL for radon and radon daughters, respectively. The transfer of radon from tap water raised the radon concentration in the bathroom air during operation of the shower. Transfer efficiencies of 37% to 70% were observed.

Analysis of a natural control agent for the red tide organism (G. breve, P. brevis) indicated the presence of sterols as an active, or adventitious component of a cytolytic mixture elaborated by the cyanobacteriumGomphosphaeria aponinaKützing. Comparisons of several plant sterols showed cholesta‐5,7‐dien‐3ß‐ol (7‐dehydrocholesterol) was cytolytically active towardG. breve. Derivatives of cholesta‐5,7‐dien‐3ß‐ol and cholest‐5‐en‐3ß‐ol (7‐dehydrocholesterol and cholesterol) were prepared to enhance water solubility. Derivatives of the type ROCO(CH2)4CO(OCH2CH2)nOH varied markedly in cytolytic activity withG. breveas the bioassay organism. The derivative of cholest‐5en‐3ß‐ol (cholesterol) (n = 12.5) showed no discernable cytolytic activity up to 20 ppm, but the cholesta‐5,7‐dien‐3ß‐ol (7‐dehydrocholesterol) derivatives (n = 22, 12.5, or 4) were cytolytic at about 5 ppm and had a dose‐dependent response. Implications of the observations are considered.

A study was made to determine if the results of quantitative analysis of phenols extracted into an organic phase could statistically be affected by the analytical technique used for the assay. One point noted is the importance of determining time to reach equilibrium in an extraction system. The results indicated that it is better to report extraction data in terms of percent extracted rather than distribution constant unless one is certain of the species existing in each phase and the kinetics of the extraction process.

Trifluralin (α,α,α‐trifluoro‐2, 4‐dinitro‐N, N‐dipropyl‐p‐toluidine) was applied in 1976 to Egam loam and Beason clay soils on the same field plots that were utilized in a 1973 study. The rates and methods of herbicide application, herbicide formulation and soil incorporation and plot size were also the same. Soybean (Glycine max L.) was seeded in both years with the same crop row‐width. Average herbicide residues, expressed as per cent of 0 day residues in 1976, were initially up to 7% higher in 1976 than in 1973, in both soils. The residues dissipated to about the same level, however, in both years starting 70 days after herbicide application, could be largely explained on the basis of rainfall distribution patterns in the two years. Less than 4% herbicide remained in 1976, 126 days after its application. The herbicide persistence was generally higher at higher herbicide rates in each soil, and could be described by first‐order kinetics.

The uptake of cadmium from three dietary sources, canned lobster digestive gland, canned porcine/liver, kidney mixture and casein cadmium chloride has been studied in rats fed a level of 20.9 μg Cd/g diet for 90 days. Analysis of the total cadmium levels in kidney, liver, spleen and brain showed uptake from the lobster digestive gland or porcine liver/kidney mixture was only about half of that observed with the casein/cadmium chloride diet. The amount of “free” cadmium present in the lobster hepatopancreas and procine liver/kidney mixture vas 45% and 43% of the total cadmium respectively and it is suggested that these levels of free cadmium are high enough to account for the uptake observed from these two matricies.
