Abstract.One of the tasks of this paper is to draw attention to Fritz Schmidt and his pioneering work in current value accounting which anticipated essential features of both Edwards and Bell's (1961) work by 40 years, and the current cost legislations and standards of the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada by roughly six decades. Above all, I am trying to relate Schmidt's work to that of Edwards and Bell, thereby clarifying some misunderstandings that still surround this relationship. Schmidt needs a champion on the North American continent, and I have tried to assume this often misunderstood task. By direct reference to and translations from Schmidt'smagnum opus, I attempt to demonstrate that Schmidt's theory possesses the following qualities:1It distinguishes clearly between general purchasing power adjustments and current value adjustments.2It does eliminate realized holding gains (cost savings) from the operating section, and presents an income concept equivalent to the “Current Operating Profit” of Edwards and Bell.3It clearly separates operating gains from holding gains (though rarely endeavors to separaterealfromfictionalholding gains, since it favors the physical capital maintenance basis of income measurement).4It applies current costs also to manufacturing operations.5It does not fail to deal with the current costs of other inputs, and generally abandons the historical cost basis.Résumé.Un des objectifs de cet article, est de faire ressortir le travail de pionier de Fritz Schmidt sur la comptabilité à la valeur actuelle qui anticipa les caractéristiques essentielles des travaux de Edwards et Bell (1961) de 40 ans et les lois et normes sur le coût actuel du Royaume‐Uni, des Etats‐Unis et du Canada d'approximativement six décades. Avant tout, j'essaie de relier les travaux de Schmidt à ceux de Edwards et Bell, afin de clarifier certaines méprises qui existent toujours relatives à cette relation. Schmidt a besoin d'un champion sur le continent nord américain et j'ai essayé d'assumer cette tâche souvent mal comprise. Abstract.The accounting and auditing profession makes extensive use of words to communicate levels of uncertainty in both formal and informal situations ranging from Handbook pronouncements to working papers to everyday communications. Yet the accounting literature does not present research on the level of ambiguity in interpretations of such communications or the factors that could potentially influence this ambiguity.This paper provides an extensive and detailed examination of the ambiguity of interpretations in the communication of uncertainty using a vocabulary familiar to accountants and auditors. Average probability levels were computed from responses to various commonly used words. Further analyses of interpretations were undertaken by comparing different methods of responding to the communications, using a variety of ways of assessing the impact on interpretations and comparing the responses of various subject groups.The studies used various experimental designs in order to provide the internal validity necessary to interpret research results. The external validity was obtained by using common words, reasonably sophisticated subjects, observations at various times and by comparing with the results of experiments in other settings.This paper demonstrates that ambiguity exists and that this ambiguity is reasonably stable for the vocabulary of the accountant. Also ambiguity can be increased by the use of difficult response modes by the interpreter but it cannot easily be reduced.

Résumé.La profession comptable et de vérification fait grand usage de mots pour communiquer les niveaux d'incertitude dans des situations formelles et informelles s'étendant des déclarations du Manuel, en passant par les documents de travail jusqu'aux communications de tous les jours. La littérature comptable ne présente pas de recherches sur le niveau d'ambiguïté dans les interprétations de telles communications ou sur les facteurs qui pourraient potentiellement influencer cette ambiguïté.Cet article fournit un examen détaillé et approfondi de l'ambiguïté des interprétations dans la communication de l'incertitude en faisant usage d'un vocabulaire familier aux comptables et aux vérificateurs. Des niveaux de probabilité moyens furent calculés à partir des réponses à différents mots communément utilisés. Des analyses supplémentaires des interprétations furent entreprises pour comparer différentes méthodes de répondre aux communications. Pour ce faire, nous avons utilisé différentes façons pour évaluer l'impact sur les interprétations et pour comparer les réponses des sujets de différents groupes.Nous avons fait usage de différents designs expérimentaux afin d'assurer la validité interne nécessaire à l'interprétation des résultats de la recherche. La validité externe fut assurée par l'utilisation: de mots communs, de sujets raisonnablement sophistiqués, d'observations à différents moments et en faisant des comparaisons avec les résultats d'expériences dans d'autres cadres.Cet article démontre que l'ambiguïté existe et que cette ambiguïté est raisonnablement stable pour le vocabulaire du comptable. Abstract.Following a five year moratorium on adoption of interest capitalization by the SEC, the Financial Accounting Standards Board issued SFAS No. 34 mandating that firms previously writing off interest charges related to the construction of assets change to capitalizing those charges. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of this change in terms of the security market's reactions both to policy announcements leading up to the promulgation of SFAS No. 34, and to earnings announcements following implementation by affected companies. Significant average market reactions are indicated for two of ten policy announcements before the effects of firm size are considered; however, significance disappears when those effects are removed from excess returns. Although a bias is detected in the forecasts of analysts consistent with less than full revision to include the earnings impact, there is little evidence of market reactions to announcements of those earnings.Résumé.Après un moratoire de cinq ans sur l'adoption de la capitalisation de l'intérêt par la S.E.C., le Financial Accounting Standards Board a émis le bulletin numéro 34 qui demande aux entreprises qui passaient aux dépenses les charges d'intérêts reliées à la construction d'actifs, de les capitaliser. Abstract.Uncertainty or ambiguity about what specific probability to associate with a given event is a problem for auditors and is one that has been shown to influence the decisions of others. While some theories of probability assume this problem away, others have tried to address it in various ways.This paper provides a formal analysis of this question and presents a means of characterizing the ambiguity associated with the probability inference. SummaryThe main objective of Larsson and Chesley's (1986) paper is to provide a framework for an auditor to assign a probability measure associated with uncertainty or ambiguity related to certain types of events arising in an audit environment. For this framework the authors extracted and applied the general methodology developed by Larsson (1976) in his doctoral thesis, which extends a subjective probability measure from a known s̀‐algebra θ to an unknown and an extended class β, such that an auditor (decision maker), when faced with an extended lottery on events in β, can still come up with the use of utility theory maximization to rank the decisions. The authors make the following claims: (1) their methodology helps the auditor with this new audit tool of probability measure assessment; (2) their measure can capture a number of previously specified approaches by others in this area; and (3) their measure provides some “intuitive conclusions and some well‐known mathematical properties.

Abstract.This study documents management's reactions to an inventory tax allowance that is based on inventory levels at the beginning of the year. Such an allowance was permitted by the tax authorities in Canada and Israel.The study develops a theoretical model which shows that a rational management should increase the firm's inventory levels on the balance sheet date beyond what the normal ordering policy would indicate. Moreover, tax authorities, in failing to anticipate this behavior, may,ceteris paribus, overcompensate firms for inflation. Empirical evidence shows that firms do, indeed, alter their ordering policies so that they will hold larger inventories on the balance sheet date. The study also shows that the tax authorities overcompensated firms in Israel, but did not overcompensate firms in Canada.Résumé.Cette étude documente les réactions du management à un dégrèvement fiscal afférent aux stocks basé sur les niveaux des stocks au début de l'année. Un tel dégrèvement était permis par les autorités fiscales au Canada et en Israël.L'étude développe un modèle théorique qui montre qu'un management rationnel devrait augmenter les niveaux des stocks de la firme à la date du bilan, au‐delà de ce que la politique normale d'approvisionnement pourrait indiquer. Abstract.The purpose of this note is to provide empirical evidence concerning the assumption of internal controls neutrality, with respect to compliance testing, using either monetary unit sampling or physical unit selection. The results do not support the neutrality assumption.
