ABSTRACTBy means of a process of pragmatic and philosophical investigation set out in three stages a method has been successively developed and set to work for linking health and social training courses of medium length to research. This method consists of strategies and prescriptive models. In the first stage the training is organised and the teachers' frames of references are developed. During the second stage an intensified identification of the major subjects and professional competences is started, by means of the feedback process inherent in the strategy. On this follows the further identification of relevant fields of research—elucidated by the prescriptive models—by means of a research process. From the third stage, which comprises a solid research and developmental programme, consisting of three principal phases, the prescriptive models are directive. aCollege of Higher Education for Health Professions in östergötlandABSTRACTIn order to get information on the risk to nurses of developing burnout syndrome an interview was carried out with 69 nurses from a large hospital and 28 nurses from a small hospital. Particular attention was paid to the following questions in the questionnaire: Does burnout occur among nurses on a short‐stay hospital ward? Is the risk of burnout associated with any particular field of medicine? Does the service as a nurse, hours on duty or rank have any significance? Does the size of the hospital have any influence? Are there any ways of preventing burnout? The questions were asked to establish the presence of a psychical, physical, social and emotional type in addition to factors from the MBI scale. The results showed that nurses risk developing burnout regardless of age, period of service, hours on duty, rank, or field of medicine. The nurse's personality is apparently of relevance but the determinant for burnout development is how different stressors affect the individual. Some methods are proposed whereby the nurses can better cope with the stressors. However, these methods are certainly insufficient and further research is important to define more clearly the principles by which the development of burnout syndrome can be preven

ABSTRACTAs institutionalised psychogeriatric patients are very vulnerable, a pilot project was undertaken to develop an instrument to evaluate the quality of their care. The proposed instrument is based on qualitative findings from observations, interviews, records and literature review. It focuses on individual patients, groups of patients, families and the unit, and includes nine items which are measured in terms of administrative, affective and instrumental aspects of care. This paper only describes the data gathered on one of these foci—the involvement of families as both providers of care and as clients requiring support. From the data it appears that the family role as a provider of care is enhanced by support received from the staff and, therefore, family support was selected as an item by which to evaluate quality of care. ABSTRACTThirty‐five patients operated on for femoral neck fracture were studied. Fifteen (42.9%) became acutely confused after surgery. Problems in the 14 components of basic nursing care (Henderson 1964), were identified by means of interviews with the patients and their caregivers. The quantitative analysis of the results showed that significantly more of the acutely confused patients had problems in nine out of 14 components of basic nursing care as compared with the non‐confused patients. The qualitative analysis showed that the problems of the non‐confused patients were mostly caused by the fracture and by hospitalisation. The same problems were also present among the acutely confused patients who, in addition, had problems which arose from the acute confusional

ABSTRACTThe questionnaire CICI:PQ for measuring needs, concerns and coping of parents of chronically ill children was mailed to 85 families with children with cystic fibrosis (CF). Some questions about the parents' experiences of the health care system were also included. Fifty‐four per cent responded—in all cases but two the mothers. More than half of the mothers wanted help with or opportunities to discuss the state of health and the emotional development of the child and dietary issues. Many of them were concerned about the child's future. Shortage of time was another problem. The coping strategies used when having problems with the child were partly different from those used when problems arose with the spouse. Most mothers were satisfied with the hospital care and the CF paediatrician. They wanted further support from the physiotherapist and many of them missed a CF nurse.
