SynopsisThe hair perforating ability ofMicrosporum gypseumandTrichophyton vanbreuseghemiiwas tested in presence of seventeen oils. Clove, olive and turpentine oils were found to be fully inhibitory for hair penetration by both fungi. Hair segments smeared with cantheridine oil and keocarpin hair vitalizer failed to reveal any perforation byT. vanbreuseghemiiwhereas arnica and shikakai oils showed little perforation by this fungus.

SynopsisA series of clofibric acid amides has been synthesized and previously reported by the authors as possessing enhancer activityin vitroin athymic nude mouse skin against model drugs, hydrocortisone‐21‐acetate and β‐methasone‐17‐valerate. An assay was required for each of these enhancers however, which would be specific for each compound and would also separate model drugs and their metabolite peaks. This study reports reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography assays for clofibric acid amide and seven derivatives (Ia–Ig). All enhancers showed maximum absorption at 232 nm, betamethasone (BM) and its valerate (BMV) at 238 nm, and hydrocortisone (HC) and its acetate (HCA) at 242 nm. Practical units of detection for the amides were 0.46–2.8 μg ml‐1and peaks were sharp and well‐separated from steroid peaks in three vehicles – methanol alone. Franz diffusion cell receptor phase samples (isotonic phosphate buffer), and full‐thickness athymic nude mouse skin extracts in methanol.Mobile phases consisted of various proportions of acetonitrile and water, some with 2‐propanol. The octyl amide for example, with mobile phase CH3CN: H2O (85:15) at 1 ml min‐1had a retention time (tR) of 7.9 mins. SynopsisCrithmum maritimumL. is a halophyte and chasmophyte apiaceous plant, which grows on all the world's coastlines but is particularly abundant in France. The essential oil obtained by steam distillation from samples of leaves ofCrithmum maritimumL. gathered in two areas of France, Brittany and Provence, was analysed first by ultraviolet spectroscopy and secondly by capillary GC.In the first analysis, two distinct UV spectra were obtained depending on the two origins. In all, about 27 components were identified in the two sample types by GC, and they were quantified when possible. Dillapiole is the main constituent representing 75% of the oil whatever its origin.

SynopsisA method for the determination of methyldibromoglutaronitrile in cosmetic products is described. Reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography and reductive electrochemical detection is employed to provide for improved selectivity and detectability compared to alternative methods. The method detects 0.002% methyldibromoglutaronitrile in cosmetic products and has a linear range from 0.006 up to 0.06%, which can easily be extended to the legally allowed limit of 0.1% by means of a simple dilution step. At a level of 0.03% the coefficient of variation was estimated to be 1.7%. Recoveries measured were between 98 and 100%.The method has been subjected to a ruggedness test, which indicated that it was stable, but slightly sensitive for a decrease in the detection potential. More than 130 cosmetic products have been analysed using the method. In 19 samples methyldibromoglutaronitrile was detected in concentrations varying between 0.002% and 0.030%.

SynopsisAn established cytotoxicity test for plastic materials in medical devices has been adapted and used to assess the relative potential irritancy of cosmetic ingredients and formulations during product development. Serum‐free medium containing a novel protein supplement supported growth in suspension of LS mouse fibroblast cells. Release of the vital dye Neutral Red from pre‐loaded cells suspended in agar was the endpoint. Test substances and reference standards were applied to a central well cut into the agar, a sensitive method which allowed accurate dose application and yielded consistent results. Relative irritancy potential was measured quantitatively by comparing the diameters of the clear zones of damaged cells which surround the central well. The test has been used with raw materials such as surfactants, preservatives and herbal extracts, as well as finished products ranging from shampoos and conditioners to creams, lotions and coloured cosmetics.
